I have a Denon AVR 787 that I'm using and trying to hookup an old school LP player to it. For some reason, the AUX input does not sufficiently amplify the sound, as the I have to crank up the voulme to -10.0 just to hear anything at all. I tried then running the the LP player through the CDR input with no change. Any suggestions on what I can do to connect the LP player to the reciever? Or is analog simply obsolete? :p

Thanks in advance.

LP cartridges produce a low voltage, 3 to 4 mv, a CD player around a volt. Also the LP are made to the RIAA curve, this has to be equalized. You need a high gain phono input with RIAA equalization.

To use it with a modern receiver like your Denon, you need a phono preamp.

People post on this again and again by the way. You could have found the answer in numerous posts about this topic in these forums. It would be nice if there was a vinyl and vintage forum. I think that would make it easier.

Luckily I found an old school Yamaha 2 channel amp sitting in the garage that'll I'll put to use. Normally, I would have taken the time to research the forums and find the answers, but I was in a bit of a rush this time around- thanks again though. A vinyl and vintage forum does sound like a good idea.

I agree that a Vinyl/Phono group would be an excellent idea. Only because topics such as Phono Preamps, Cartridge and turntable questions don't really have a home :)

MAKE IT SO! :D

Earth to Major Earth to Major come in Major.:D How about a room for us stick-in-the-muds. A couple of stickied threads discussing moderate priced tables, phono pre-amp basics, might be helpful for those new to vinyl.

There have been enough questions about the LP, and a sea of ignorance among people digging out an old turntable.

We need easy access to the correct input to use, phono preamps and RIAA equalization. We need new members to have good access to information about how to set up a turntables, balance, leveling, tracking angle and tracking error etc.

An improperly set up turntable sounds terrible, and damages records.

As did I! Here in San Diego the place to go is Lou's Records in Encinitas. HUGE selection of used vinyl in one building and a great selection of new/recent vinyl in the other.

I picked up some Ben Folds and The Fugees :)

Not to sound like a commercial, but I think it's important for people in their own areas to support their local records shops! :)
