for the same price , which is better?

a higher series 256mb video card or a lower series 512mb video card?
(faster clock speed or more memory)

e.g.

Inno3d 7600GS 256mb
or
Inno3d FX6600 512mb

I use my PC for games ...

The 7600gs by far.

I knew my exstensive pc knowledge might come in handy here.

The 6600 may have more ram, but the 7600gs is a newer, faster chipset. It is able to utilize the 256 more efficiently than the 6600 can utilize the 512.

512 doesnt help unless your at crazy high resolutions.

Get the 7600gs, no question.

And what games are you playing? You may want to go a little higher if you want the card to last longer.

I agree with Waffle. The 7600 is a much more powerful card from a whole new generation. The amount of V-RAM is rarely a deciding factor in choosing a video card.

Well, counter-strike got a nice update to the source engine in Counter-Strike: Source. Thats what I play, I've managed to put myself umong the ranks of some pro player by being an active member of a couple Cyber Pro League clans.

You gotta play Half-life 2, Prey is an ok shooter. Far Cry is a great shooter, and really challenging.

Well, CS:S is a very different game than 1.6. So I'd be careful, though some say source is easier, due to a fact that the head hitbox is 73% bigger.

Honestly, I say they are two different games, and shouldnt even be compared.

You should Also try Day OF Defeat: Source, its a pretty fun game, I do know that is absolutely the best for LAN parties.

CS:S comes with bots, I am unsure about DoD:S, but it runs the same engine, so I dont see why not. 1.6 still comes with bots, but HL2 is a single palyer game. PRey is also a single palyer game.

I can check if DoD:s has bots real quick.

I warn you, bots are very taxing on the cpu.

/edit, DoD:S does not have bots.

Speaking of LANs, next next weekend I am attending a 24 hour lan party. I games I am supposed to trump in are Counter Strike Source, and Need For Speed: Most Wanted.

I may to better in some others, but these are the only ones I really play.

That system should have absolutely no trouble with the Source engine. I'm running an Athlon XP 1800+, 768 MB RAM, and a GeForce 6600 GT and I can play Source games with all of the settings maxxed out.

our 9800 pro should run source perfectly, granted, I run an Opteron 148 oc'd to 2.7ghz, and a 7800gtx.

But seriously, 9800pro's are still pretty darn fast, just a little faster than a 6600gt. The source engine is even optimized for ATI.

Go GST. The added clock speed will give you a bigger gain than videoram will for now.

If you are the "I upgrade my videocard every 2-3 years" person, get the GS-512mb.

I'm the person who upgrades his gamerig constantly. I'm waiting for reverse SMP before I do my next motherboard/CPU/RAm swap. Go right now a second 7800GT is on my agenda...I want some SLI lovin.

Current setup, which rocks hard on HL2:

Athlon 64 3500+
2 GB DDR (2 x 1GB)
1TB disk space (1 x 200GB, 2 x 400GB)
NForce4 SLI motherboard
geforce 7800GT 256mb
480w antec psu.

It's a pretty solid machine, but I'm loking for more.
