The problem with that is that the dealer doesn't have to live with your speakers. I wouldn't let a dealer explain to me why I should or shouldn't like a speaker. I'd let me ears do the deciding. You wrote off the 20's, without listening to them, based on the advice of a dealer who a) won't be living in your home and listening to the speakers you end up purchasing and b) has no reason not to try to sell you on a higher model.
I was listening to the speakers. The 60s had better bass and much fuller sound to me. I wasn't just taking the guy's word for it. He was just explaining why he thought I liked the 60s so much better. Based on listening to the 40s it was obvious that I wouldn't be happy with the 20s. If you're happy with the bookshelves, great. For me, they just don't work as well with music, even with a sub. For movies they're probably fine. btw if you buy the 40's with the Paradigm stands, they're almost as much as the 60s.

Really? Why not? I may agree that if you have a high-end system or tube amp and want to do a lot of critical listening that you may want to look elsewhere. I have the 100's and use them primarily for ht, but also find them surprisingly musical. imho

I didn't mean all of them, just the 40s and probably the 20s. I found the 60s to be excellent for music. I'm sure the 100s are awesome.

I started looking for a 5.1 system with bookshelf speakers but I haven't found anything I'm happy with. For me towers seem the best way to go if you're primarily concerned about the music.

That is exactly what I have found, but I found that earlier in my search and honestly never listened to the 20s/40s, because I had pretty much ruled out bookshelves by the time I got to the Paradigms (and listening to the Monitor 9s, 11s and then studio 60s and some MagPan took all the time I had).

I also heard the 60s and 100s(someone else shared the room for a little bit) on a Yahmaha receiver and thought that they sounded fine. It might just be that I rarely listen to music at a high enough volume to have clipping or it could be that people underestimate what the receivers are capable of today.

Onix Rockets

In your $2k price range you should also check out the Onix Rocket and Reference line from av123.com. They are internet direct but their headquaters is in CO so you could probably find some locals for an audition.

Does anyone know how the Rockets compare to the Paradigm Studios? I bought another Internet brand that I ended up sending back. I'm interested in Onix, but I will probably not have the opportunity to listen to them here (Tampa) without ordering them.

FWIW I have Studio 60 v3s and love them. They have great bass and play music wonderfully. I have no info as to if they are any good with HT because I use mine are 100% for music. My TV's speakers are fine for movies and I prefer books:eek:
Anyway like someone else said the price difference of the 40s to 60s is very small with stands involved. I also don't think 2.1 is ideal if you don't have to. Getting a sub to intergrat properly can be a PITA and with the nice flor standers you don't have that issue.
