Paradigm Signature v2 tweeter replacement

I don’t know if everyone remembers my sob story about a month ago, but the movers crushed one of the tweeters on my Paradigm Signature S8v2. I’ve fought with their insurance company for over a month with no resolution. I finally just ordered the tweeter ($300) and fixed the thing myself. The scary thing is my move is only temporary. I sold my house and moved into an apartment for 8 months while I finish the contract at my current practice. After that I’m moving from Tampa to Phoenix. If my speakers can’t survive an 8 mile ride with the movers, I don’t want to know how they’ll fair on an 1800 mile journey. I guess I’ll have to put them in my front seat and have the girlfriend ride in the back of the moving truck with the furniture.

I’m done ranting. The point of this post is: A fellow audioholic Warpdrv requested I post photos of the tweeter assembly so he could compare them to the Signature v1 tweeter assembly. Warpdrv, you were right the tweeter was connected by spades. Here's the pics.

I'm glad it turned out ok for ya codexp3.... As disheartening as it was, it was an easy replacement for you it looks... Thanks for taking the time to post the pics... I assume that its back to normal and sounds great... :)

They sound great once again. I didn’t get to hear them in the same room or on the same amps, but as far as I can tell they’re 100%. They’re actually packed away until I move again. Too much sound for an apartment! I downsized my system, ditched the McIntosh 402s (too heavy to EVER move again) and bought a Sunfire 5200 multichannel to power the whole thing. I’ve since added a pair of 635w Bryston 7b SST monos for my mains with a third one on the way for the center channel (so much for downsizing). Granted I won’t be able to use any of it for 7 more months and it would have made more sense to buy everything after I move again, but I never let sense get in the way of home theater decisions.

I got an idea, I will store them safely and securely at my house until you need them in 7 months from now.... NO CHARGE !!!!!

More then happy to help out a fellow Audioholic !!! :D

Codex, could I by any chance have the old/damaged tweeter? I want to analyze the tweeter from that speaker system. I will pay the shipping.

I will call Audio Workshop on Monday and see if they still have it. I think they sent it back to Paradigm, but if they didn't it's yours. The beryllium dome was in pieces. It's a heavy little thing, Paradigm certainly didn't skimp on quality materials.

searching for Paradigm Signature replacement tweeter

Hi Codexp3,

Nice photos.

I have a problem with the tweeter in one of my S2's (it wasn't physically damaged but is suddenly started crackling with higher piano notes). Where did you order your replacement tweeter from? Seems like Paradigm is reluctant to sell it directly to me, don't understand why. My closest Paradigm dealer is an hour's drive and they don't seem very friendly. I just don't want to go back there.

Many thanks,
Chris

Chris,

Maybe not a perfect solution for you, but there is a pair of V.2, S2's on ebay right now that has one damaged woofer. I think there are 5 days left. Depending on what they go for, it might be cost effective to pick them up. I know a new tweeter replacement costs around $350 (I was curious and they quoted me $720/pair) from an authorized dealer. If you go through a dealer, they usually require the model/serial number before they will order one for you.

I hope you're not planning on letting them win! Their goal is to drag things out so you give up. Don't let them!

Well... Looks like it can be an uphill battle sometimes... http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?cspkr&1132080168&openflup&2&4#2

the 1st thing you can expect is for ups to pull a fast one, they are going to send a truck to your buyers house to pick up the speakers to take them to an"inspection center" tell ups that you need onsite inspection & that you will not allow the speakers to be transported from site.

even though you tell ups most of the time they still try to pick up the item instead of sending an onsite inspector, once ups has the damaged speakers in their hands they will send them back to your doorstep without asking you.

the second thing you can expect is for the ups inspector to deny your claim on the grounds of improper packing no matter how they are packed"unwritten policy" but as long as you know the ups packing guidelines & followed them or better than thats easy to beat.

the third thing is that after you get an onsite inspection you will no longer be dealing with ups you will be dealing with their insurance carrier, ups does not insure their own shipping its outsourced, the insurance carrier will then send you some forms to fill out & request a damage repair estimate at that time your buyer will have to do a lot of legwork lugging the speakers to a dealer for a estimate.

with electronics it isnt so bad but with speakers damage claims are a nightmare & unless your carefull everybody looses,as Kennyt said above if only one speaker received damage ups will not pay for the pair, cabinet damage can never be repaired without costing as much as buying a whole new speaker & if you didnt sell them for msrp they will only pay what you sold them for no matter how high you insured them for so cabinet repair is pretty much out of the question.

if both speakers have not recieved damage its going to be a long hard road & your buyer or you will end up getting screwed, some reading between the lines here helps, both speakers need to recieve damage for ups to pay for them both.
Details on your case? Or old thread?

To avoid you buying Paradigm gear cheap on the internet.

Still. Solvable if you already have dealer-purchased gear with the same drivers...

I need to go check that out. If it's low enough on E-Bay.. .I'd really like more Sig gear.

[Did you replace the tweeter yourself or take it to a dealer?
I just recieved a pair of S6 v2 off audiogon an hour ago and both tweeters are smashed in with no visable damage on the outside of the box. I notified the seller and he said he would file a claim with fed-ex. Talk about going from elation to depression in 5 seconds.

!!!Safety Concern!!!

If the cone is broken or if you cannot tell, place some masking tape or something over it to seal it.
Chances are your exposure level would be very low. Beryllium exposure usually ties back to repeated occupational exposure, but it won't help you, so seal it up!
As long as the Beryllium is intact, there is no concern.

*Welcome to the Forum - sorry it is in such bad circumstances

Oh man thats a bummer sorry to hear that : ( sounds like they were broke before shipping and unless they were shipped to the shippers requirements they wont cover it but I wish you the best . Did you use paypal because they might back you up and credit your account once there shipped back to seller then let him make his claim since he shipped them , but check with paypal or your credit card company if used . just my 2 cents.

Good to know that PayPal may stick up for you.
Before I received a couple of damaged items, I would have been in complete agreement with you. But give the seller the benefit of the doubt until you are certain; you need the seller's cooperation, and, in the end, you as the buyer have the most to lose.
I have received two damaged items bought via Audiogon. In both cases, I was incredulous that the seller was trying to get the shipping company (or me) to eat the cost of pre-existing damage. I could not believe such damage could happen without the outside of the box being destroyed!
Fortunately, I did a thorough inspection of the packaging before I contacted the seller. If I had started making accusations up-front, I would have lost the seller's help in resolving the issue. I still can't believe some of the damage, but once I really looked at it, I realized that the seller sent me an item in mint condition and well packed.
I don't think TitaniumHead will mind if I share this pic of the packaging he sent me when we were comparing notes:

The far cross-brace of the foam is positioned to protect the tweeter. Compare the amount of stress marks on it vs. the two sides. Look at the tears in the corners.
The center is relieved to provide clearance for the tweeter & the tweeter is recessed within the speaker front, yet you can see the circle in the center of the cross-brace where the pad is blemished from contact with the tweeter. I don't know how much force it would take to compress the foam far enough to crush the protective screen of the tweeter, but this foam has been there! Paradigm has the resources to properly engineer/design their packaging to withstand the rigors of normal handling. These saw some serious abuse!
Sure, the seller could have "doctored" the packaging to look this way.

I worked for UPS at night while in college.
This time of year is the busiest for all shippers.

They hire many new temporary worked for the holiday shipping season; which starts late Aug early Sept.
These inexperienced temps are required to move one package per second while unloading trailers onto a sorting conveyor.
Sometimes trailers are missing large sections of rollers that help felicitate unloading; so the boxes are thrown.

UPS is is the worst I had a friend that use to work for UPS and they use to play catch with some of the lighter packages and just throw them around. One time of many times I received boxes/packages from them that looked like someone played football with it andI mentioned it to my friend and he smiled and said they do "seriously" and smiled . I received my AVA SPL DVD and it was even double boxed and it had foot prints on it:eek: and needless to say when I opened it up the case was in pieces . Oh did I mention I hate UPS and for some reason no matter what time of the year it is thats what happens everytime. But fedex I've had nothing but good luck with and when I Get any shipment from them the box always looks like it just came out of the factory like new. Everytime I hear im getting something threw UPS I CRINGE !!!
