i just noticed that my BETA 50's tweeters sound like they're "broken"

like the voices are distorted.

does that mean my tweeters are toast?

How did you arive at this conclusion?

Most of the human voice is in the upper bass/midrange area. Normally, tweeters will only reproduce a small part of the human voice. If you're putting your ear to the tweets or, even worse, disconnecting the mid/bass speaker(s) then you're naturally not gonna like what you hear.

If the system as a whole sounds fine, I think you're all right.

I don't see why you couldn't get parts from Infinity if indeed you need replacement parts....

On an aside note... I listened extensively to the Monitor line at my dealer as they didn't have the new studios available to me when I was in my search. The 9's were ok in my opinion, seemed somewhat thin to me compared to the 11's. The 11's had a wide full sound and presence to them... Plenty of punch and clarity.... Jumping up to the Studio's provided that extra mile of tightness with the better drivers and a step up in the tweeter...

Out of all the Monitors, the 11's sounded the best to me... I thought they were great.

for some reason, i can't find the english word to describe it ... it happens with female voices and piano notes, umm, it sounds like the note splits into two. i never noticed it myself til my wife and a visitor said so ... so i put my head near the tweeter and indeed it sounds like (local term direct translation: broken glass)

Hey warp I could be wrong, but I believe the new Monitor Series v.5 uses the older tweeter that the Signature line was using. At least, that is what I was told by a buddy who sells Paradigm for a living. The problem is he is so full of sh*t that I never know what to believe. Like I said I could be wrong as it would not be the first time my friend. :p:p

The only thing that was transferred from the Signature line was the G-Pal dome of the tweeter assembly. But it was put into the studio line v.4. :)

Yeah, that is right. Been a while since I have kept up w/Paradigm. Thanks for the clarification.

well, if the sig tweet went to the studio ... can we expect the old studio tweet went to the new monitor?

Very good question Mike. I was wondering the same thing. Who really knows.

i went and listened to the Monitor Titan and Monitor 9 today. i have no complaints ...

i'm seriously considering this series over MA because of two reasons:
1) these apparently get more loud
2) prices for MA have increased from the last time I inquired, although still cheaper than these Monitors, I don't like the feeling of buying something I know that's not their real value.

my Infinity BETA's on the other hand:
no tweeter spare part is available in my country, though the importer offered to "fix" my tweeter

It sure is too bad you have limited access to used products with your location..
So many great products and deals to be had on used stuff....

The Titan was real impressive. I also was amazed with the Atom. The Monitor line has really been improved upon if you ask me. Kudos to Paradigm.

Cheers,

Phil

PS Mike, could one of us order a single Beta 20 speaker for you and perhaps ship it to you??? Or, just ship the tweeter to you??? I have seen some unbelievable deals at Vanns.com. I do have an account with them. Let me know if I can be of some assistance.

Hey Mike, Vann's has a Beta 10 speaker for like $80 delivered!!!! I believe that both the 10 and 20 as well as the rest of the Beta line uses the same size tweeter. Wonder what it would cost to send that tweeter to you??? Have any idea?? Surely, it would not be too bad. I can order one if you like and send it to you. We can work out the details. PM me if you are interested. Infinity may even be able to sell one for even cheaper. Let me know my friend. Just trying to help.

Cheers,

Phil

thanks guys ...

worst case, i do have 2 pairs of beta 10's working as my surrounds ... maybe i can kill a pair of those and i can use my bedroom bookshelf to replace one of them.

and then use a studio 40 in my bedroom!

question now is:
Studio 40 vs. MA PL100

I think if you are considering the MA PL100's you would be more apt to compare them to the Paradigm Signature S4's... in pricing...

The PL100's retail for $4295 and the S4's for $3200 (before price increase ??)

I will tell you that I auditioned the PL300's and PL100's extensively last month, and they sounded amazing... I was thoroughly impressed with the sound field they put out... the ribbon tweeters on them was spectacular, this is the first ribbon I have ever auditioned, and I was really taken with them, the 100's certainly will be in need of a sub, but they were extremely pleasant.

I don't have the ability to compare them directly to the new Paradigm Sig .v2 series, with no dealer in my area that carries them. But I will say that I am extremely happy with my Sig S4's, the MA's were amazing, but I'm not sure I would say they were worth the huge leap in funds. Personally I would take the S4's over the MA PL100 for price reasons, but MA truly raised the bar in implementation of new design and build quality in the Platinum series.

Please read my full review and take on my audition on the Platinums over at AVS, HERE and there were a few others after me that reported on them as well, in pages to follow, you will have to skim to find them...

Ultimately I love my S4's and would find it hard to really need to upgrade them anytime soon. Maybe I would move up to the S6 .v2 but I'm very content now. Good luck on your hunt, and remember there are some Sigs and Studios on Audiogon, I didn't see any Platinums there when I looked.

is there a difference in the enclosure shape of the sig and studio? or just the finish?

the only reason the PL100 is for my consideration is the beautiful wood gloss finish.

i personally can't hear the SQ upgrade/difference :) makes decision making real easy for me.

Yes the Studio is square Box shaped with a vinyl finish, albeit a very nicely done veneer its still vinyl but it looks good...

The Signature is a wider in the front rounded tapered to narrower back. The Sigs IMO are extremely luxurious looking very well finished product..

See my pics in my gallery... http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44008

I can certainly take more shots of them for you if you would like me too..
