My wife and I auditioned the 60s next to the 100s and were amazed to hear that the bass seemed lower on the 60s. I would have thought that the bass would have been better on the 100s. Also we noticed that the mids and highs sounded better on the 100s as compared to the 60s but I was under the impression that the mid/tweeter were the same on the two models... Is that how it should have sounded or was something setup incorrectly? Thanks

What can cause the mids and highs to sound different when they both have the same components.. the speakers were right next to each other...

Babel...just go get some freakin' speakers...

The 40, 60 and 100 should all sound similar in the mids and highs any difference can likely be contributed to the volume of the cabinets. Since you will be running a sub and crossing-over the speakers, they will all sound pretty much be the same.(this is a little simplified but you get the drift)

If you want to go the cheapest route, get the 40. If you want to go the most expensive route get the 100. If you want something in between, get the 60.

Remember; I am running 40's in a 8000 cubic ft room and they are plenty.

I would go with the 40's because they have less cabinet volume and they are the least expensive. More cabinet volume makes it harder for the designer to make the cabinet less resonant, with a cross-over they will sound great.

LOL :) Trust me.. I am planning on getting them... :) I am waiting for the amp to come out.. (3808).. as soon as it comes out.. the HT is mine :)

I bet almost everyone who see my threads think the same thing before they even open it.. "Just buy the stupid speakers!" :)

I did the same thing but at some point you have to "strap them on" on go pick out the speakers yourself. If money and size is no contraint; get the 100's.

I disagree with Gable, I heard the 20's, 40's and 60's all side by side. For HT and Music the 40's were my fav, I just couldn't afford them. If I were you, no matter if I had the $$ or not, I would get the 40's. The 60's are the same just in a floorstanding.

The 40's will leave you money for a nice center, or sub, or surrounds, or hell a vacation.

I agree, If you don't have a large room, to get the 40's and grab some stands from rackandstands or standsandmounts... You can save yourself some cash there.

And someone tell Babel to just go buy that stuff...;)

I disagree with Gable too; I heard all 4 and bought the 40's, if I was planning on a system w/o a sub I would have bought the 100's. I am just trying to get Babel to go get his freakin' speakers! I think he will get the 40's and then always have it in the back of his mind that he should have got the 100's so I am trying to save him. That's right... I am a Babel savior...

With that sub he is buying and his room size he doesn't need the 100's.
He should just go buy the 40's and use the extra money for something else.
The 40's will cross over just fine even in a high db scenario.

What you should do Babel... is just buy the speakers and then go to some stupid store like best buy and start auditioning receivers and subs. You got 30 days to take them back, which is exactly what I would do... charge it to your credit card, and take it back.... try out the Pioneer, or the denon, or whatever, and take them back until your receiver gets released. I honestly think your waiting on something un-necessary. HDMI 1.3 probably won't be a issue for you.
Do you listen CDA music? I don't have HDMI1.3 and I haven't been able to not play anything....

I will be waiting for 1.3, in a pre pro, so I bought something that will work for me now. Start gathering your stuff... Nothing like the present !!!

GO BUY YOUR $hit !!!!!!

Yep...I got my speakers and borrowed a sub-12 from best buy. I was honestly seeing if it would work for me but it didnt so I returned it 2 days later and bought a real sub.

Babel,

I want you in the store tonight and an update on how you like the 40's 1st thing in the morning. Oh and go ahead and get the speaker stands that go with the 40's; they will tell you that they cost 300 bucks but you can talk them down to 150.

But Dad!!!! :)

No really.. If I go with the 40s.. where else can the money be spent?? I am getting the highest Center channel, etc... and everyone is saying that the two subs is overkill... I have spent the last three years saving for this bad boy.... I am thinking that I am going to go with the 100s...

my only question was why they didn't sound as nice as the 60s (which really confused my wife and I)... I wasn't sure if maybe the sales guy was doing something wrong...

If I have waited 3 years already.. what is another one or two months?? :) I can wait for the release of the 3808... :)

I don't know about the version IV. I remember comparing the version III's and found the 40's on stands look better and sound better than the floor standing models. The sub will take care of the bass better than the 100 can.

Babelfish,

If the polarity was backwards there would be less bass and maybe a little difference in the lower mids. I have had sales people do this on more than one occation. (once with Studio 100's)

Go listen again,:)

I agree 100% on this... The way I look at it, is that you might be buying the 100's to be 1 upping your friends... the towers look great, but they may be unnecessary in your room...

Now if you are planning on moving someday into a larger house or room for the 100's then by all means go with them, but looking back at my purchase I probably could have gotten away with the 40's here..

But at the same time, I run my system up with music to extreme volumes on a regular basis... and I love them... so If thats what you want, then do it...

You should check out audiogon, though... pair of 100's .v4 for real cheap...
and even gets you a sub... http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1183233330

Just called my dealer, http://www.audioemporium.com/
He has the 40's setup and running, and would love for you to stop by and have a listen that SAT. you come up to my place......

Hours:
Open: Tuesday thru Friday 11-6,
Sat 10-5
Closed: Sun & Mon

He has the Studio line all setup in the same room, so you should be able to compare the 100's and 40's side by side... I hope..

His room has acoustic treaments in it... so everything will sound good...
Got some great equipment in there, you most definately have to hit the room with the B&W's... full lineup... The 800 series is quite impressive..

They are roughly 10 miles south of my house.... :)
