Panasonic chairman plans company shift away from TVs

For those who remember when Pioneer announced it was giong out of the TV business most people thought that it just couldn't be true. Well, we certainly aren't talking about the latest Kuro displays anymore, and we haven't had a TV so impeccably built since them.

But, of all the brands, it certainly has been Panasonic which has been closest in overall quality.

This will basically leave Samsung as the only player in the plasma business and a huge hole in what many have considered the premiere lineup of quality televisions for consumers.

Hopefully, it will just prove to be rumors, but its never good to hear this type of rumor from such a superlative manufacturer.

Ah, maybe it was something like this article that prompted my friend (who is a long time employee of Pana) to mention/ask something about this. We spoke again at some later point, and he said he never heard a peep again, and I made him promise to let me know the very second he knows for sure that the worst case scenario would happen. (Because, I'd be looking real hard to scrounge up the change in my seat cushions to buy my first flat panel, you know, a 65" plasma, haha.)

It is interesting that the article quickly mentions the missed chance at the Beijing Games, because I was telling my friend during our second conversation, "Didn't you see all of those Pana plasmas EVERYWHERE during the London Games broadcasts, next to Bob Costas, next to Ryan Seacrest, etc, like that big one, at least 80" for sure minimum?", and he said yeah he sure did. They were a big sponsor. BTW, the Summer Games was (were?) after the date of the linked article.

If that day does come though, if the % savings approaches anything what the Kuros did immediately post-announcement, holy crap, they will sell out ultra mega sooper dooper fast. I'm highly doubting it though, I'm assuming the margins must be a lot lower on these Panas, and the "value ratio" is just a lot higher to begin with, IMO.

meaning what?
To rephrase a quote from Snatch:

BSA: Shut up and sit down, you big, bald f#*k. I don't like changing my TV, 3DB, and I especially don't like changing it for anything less than high quality, top of the line, Japanese designed Panasonic Plasma TVs.
3DB: We've got korean plasma tvs...
BSA: So? Who the **** wants to see 'em?
:D;)

And Samsung is Korean as well. :D

ALL TVs are now either made in Korea or China/Taiwan; few are actually produced in Japan. There are big differences between the manufacturers too, regardless of where they are located.

Where its designed is irrelevant IHO. Take a look at Onkyo as an example. Worst reliability of any of the AVRs out there.

If the rumor is true about Panasonic, it means one less display manufacturer which can't be good for competitive prices. A sales person told me that the very little profit is made on displays compared to the rest of the gear found in an HT set up.

I would hope that this is indeed a rumor as well but maybe , just maybe this could spell the end of the plasma as we know it, I have the Pio 500M and have really considered moving it to the bedroom for a bigger (70") and I know that would most likely not be a plasma probably the Sharp, I think the bigger we want/get the less plasma we see in that set up. I do think my Pio truly sucks up some energy and it is the set we mostly watch so yes I am thinking about the savings there in the long run as well, I despise the electric bills like nobody else.

Hey, Sawz. You could always do the math (if you haven't already) on the difference in energy costs, probably on an annual basis. You'll probably see that the cost differential is ~$50 or less. Maybe a big deal...but if it is, then perhaps a 70" TV shouldn't be a purchase. :D

For example, on Crutchfield.com, you can see the reported estimated annual energy consumption and costs. The 64" Samsung PN64E8000 plasma consumes twice as much electricity as the 65" Samsung UN65ES8000 LCD...but the estimated annual cost differential is about $19. Of course, this depends on how many hours a day they assume people watch, and your cost of electricity - but it's a bit of info for you.

Hey Sawz, (just a thought for power savings)

I have a 50" Pioneer Elite. I though it got a little warm in the summer time. So I found the Energy Saving option in the manual. It has three stages, "Standard" "Save1" & "Save2"
While set to the Save1 and Save2 settings, it gives off much less heat and uses less power.
It does dim the screen slightly; however since we do 90% of our viewing at night, it's not noticeable.

SSHH!! My AVR might hear this and starting to act as it was true :D;)

Less competition is always bad but now with Samsung and Sony decided to stop being price competitive, its will get even worse

I love their new flagship the 65" vt50. I can't imagine wanting to go with anything else after this. If I was loaded I'd buy a spare or two and garage them. :) I hope it isn't true.

If it is true, prices will drop when it happens and you will be able to ;)

I read that power restrictions were tougher to meet with Plasmas because they do use more power than an LED/LCD. So for 60" and up, Plasmas weren't going to meet Energy Star requirements at some point. Also as mentioned, it is harder for them to turn a profit on plasmas because they are trying to be cost competitive to LCD on a low margin device and LCD is still dropping in price.

The display market is VERY competitive right now and is actually struggling a bit :( So I wouldn't doubt some level of truth to the statement; if not now, then not too far off in the future.

I saw a denial from Panasonic on AVS Forum yesterday.

I'll be okay with Panny getting out of the plasma game when OLEDs are on the market and comparably priced.
