Panasonic details new DMP-BD50 profile 2.0 player with dts-ma/truehd decoding

Can some please explain why bitstream is not a big deal? Assuming you can decode in the player and use the analog inputs on a receiver, then you still would need some type of bass management applied to the analog signals which most receivers (I think) and BD players do not have. Am I missing something here..... Is it a big deal to send full range signals to all channels and a sub??

If you want to use the 1.1 features like audio mixing, you cannot use bitstream anyway - you'll have to use PCM.

For bass management with analog you have to rely on the player no?

If you have a player that does decoding you can send the dts-ma and TrueHD as PCM through HDMI and let the receiver use bass management.

If Sony can create a firmware that will enable the PS3 to Internally Decode DTS-MA, I will consider the PS3 as the GREATEST CONSUMER PRODUCT in the world! The PS3 would be the GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. And just for that, I would buy the PS3 again to worship it and to say, "I'm not worthy".:D:D:D
They will definitely add dts-ma decoding, but I'm sure it will be after the first standalone player on the market has been out for at least 30 days.

That's what happened with profile 1.1, so I expect the same for 2.0 and dts-ma updates.

Thanks for the response dobyblue. Just to make sure i understand the new-fangled formats....

If using the analog inputs/outputs (assuming the player does the decoding), either the player or the receiver would need to apply any/all bass management. This would be a PCM signal?

If you have a reciever with HDMI but no decoding capabilities, then (assuming the player does the decoding) you would send the signal via HDMI to the receiver which would apply any bass management settings. This would also be a PCM signal?

If you have a newer receiver with decoding capabilities, you would send the signal as bitstream via HDMI for the receiver to decode, etc.

Is this correct?

Yes, if your receiver is HDMI 1.1 compatible then you can send the decoded signal as PCM so the receiver will apply all the bass management.

If it's HDMI 1.3 you can either choose PCM or bitstream; the receiver will decode the bitstream TrueHD or dts-ma into PCM and apply bass management.

For analog I believe the receiver would need to have ADC's in order to convert the analog to digital, someone else can correct me if I'm wrong there.

I know on mine if you use the multi-channel inputs you can't do anything other than adjust the channel levels.

And doubtful it will be offered again now that there is no real competition. While I keep thinking about buying the PS3 I think I'm going to wait and get this player when it becomes available, hopefully soon.
