Panasonic 65" Noise/Grain issue

Hi,

I set up a Panasonic Viera TH-65PZ850U 65" plasma for a friend.

We have noticed on some movies, there is highly noticable grain/noise
that takes away from the movie. it's very distracting. it's not the player
since it happens on both HD and Blu ray.

example:

HD - Battlestar Galactica (Space scenes, instead of pure black, it's dirty and noisy, grey instead of black. on my samsung lcd, it's clean)

Blu Ray- Pearl Harbor (noise can be scene in certain scenes like the intro in the barn, sky,etc...)

Blu Ray- Iron Man (he's testing the suite, the background is noisy)

what I see are pixels floating around. like the grain in the film moving around.

other movies are clean as a whistle and blacks are blacks like Wall E.

Is an issue or limitation with the panasonic plasma?

Thanks for any help.

How is it connected? What about other than dvds? Did it start all of the sudden? Are you using a switched outlet?

I think this is an issue with the material itself, I saw this already on one of the movies I was playing, but all the rest of the movies I have seen were perfect.

I am using my new Oppo BDP-83 and the PQ is flawless

it's connected via HDMI direct to the plasma through an APC
conditioner. Toshiba HD-A35 and Pioneer Elite BD-05.

the movie/material on my samsung lcd does not have this issue
at all and I'm using an older samsung bdp-1400. the space scenes in BSG are pitch black and crisps. on the panasonic, it's looks worst an a standard dvd/VHS tape. really strange.

it just sucks that this plasma, at this price cannot handle different
materials the same.

I was hoping there was some fix or tweak someone may know about.

thx

Screen size might play a slight factor. Id go through normal thing by unplugging all components and start with one at a time:(

If you have not already done so, use an AVIA II HDTV test disk (or one of the equivalent competitors), and run through the Picture Menu settings using their instructions and test patterns. I had very good success improving my 50" Panny's PQ.

One source for the AVIA is: http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=86611 at only ~$27 you can not go wrong.

I did get him the DVE Blu ray Set up discs. I just have not had to time
to tweak it further. I'll give it a try later.

I suspect it's the plasma since in the same movie you can go from
a sharp crystal clear scene to a crappy one. why would they even sell
a tv like that, I don't know.

I'll try panasonic tech support if that does any good.

thx

You posted your own answer:D
If it was the display, it would be there all the time.

Let's start with the basics: Take it off of vivid mode. The THX/cinema mode will lower the luminance, contrast, color saturation and sharpness much closer to what the TV is designed to do. It will also bring out a lot of shadow detail and lower the white balance.

Unless you're on a sales floor trying to see which TV you can nuke out the colors on the most, taking it off of vivid is the solution. It may seem "boring" to you at first, but lower the lights and give it a few minutes. Once you have experienced something closer to reality, go back to vivid and you'll be shocked and fumbling with your remote to change it back.

The TV you have is awesome. I have seen it perform the way it was intended before and I can assure you what you're seeing is not a inherent problem with Panasonic Plasmas.
