Overkill for my needs?

I've been researching speakers for the past month or so and the more I see/hear, the more confused I get. My room is approx 14'x25'x9'...I'd be using these speakers for 100% home "theater"....I'm actually talking 90% tv shows and 10% movies and they'd be powered by a Pioneer Elite SC-05 receiver. I'm not looking for loudness...we listen at moderate levels...I'm just looking for clarity and most importantly, good vocals from my center channel.

So anyway...I started with speakers in the $1500 price range (LCR only...I'll use my existing surrounds right now...5.1 setup and I have a Velodyne 4000 sub)...and now am considering the $3000 price range. But do I need to considering this is only home theater? For instance...would Salk Songtowers or PSB Imagine Ts sound that much better than PSB Image t6's or Aperion 6t's considering it's for home theater use only? I can sometimes hear a big difference b/w some speakers listening to music...which makes me think I have to spend more for the better speaker...but not sure if that matters as much in a home theater application.

Before spending $3K, have you auditioned a variety of speaker technologies?

You've listened to monopole (direct front radiating speakers in a box).

Have you listened to diipole and bipole speakers? They may change the way you view speakers.

I agree with Mr. "deftech..."
before you drop $1.5K to $3K on speakers, you really need to audition as many different units as you can. Granted they might not sound the same in your home and they do in a special showroom, but you will learn the differences between types and brands.

You have a good receiver, so your speaker choices can run from flat panel Magnepan's to multi-speaker towers. Have fun listening to what is available and good luck.

I agree with the others about listening to as many as possible but I'm not in the camp that it takes mega buck speakers to watch TV. That said I use (and love ) Salk Song Towers, a Song Center, and Song Surrounds for TV, movies, and music - but I bought them because perfect reproduction of music is critical to me. I'd spend some time listening to as many as possible and pick something based as much on the quality of the timbre matched center as anything else. I would even listen speakers that I wouldn't normally consider for music like some of Klipsch's reference line of home theater products. I find the fatiguing for music but you may find them pleasant for movies. I would also shop with placement in mind. For example do you have the room or wife buy-in for big rear ported or bipolar floorstanders that need to be 2-3 feet from the front wall or do you need wall hugging front ported or sealed speakers. If I were you I'd listen to several brands and technologies then think about placement and then listen again. An investment that size isn't something to do quickly. Take your time.

I had the same questions as you are having and was given some great advice on here about auditioning speakers. I originally wanted Klipsch reference stuff and was dead set on getting them untill I auditioned the Def Tech line and they have change the way I listen to music and watch movies. I spent quit a bit on speakers but have never looked back at all I love them and cant keep from listing to them every day. So like other ppl said take a listen to dif types of speakers and how dif they all sound. But remember just cause it costs a lot dosent mean that there good or sound good to you kinda like Bose.
