One of my sons backfisted the upper side of the Mythos cabinet and I caught it halfway through its descent. Both boys are decorated Tournament of Champions Multiple Discipline Winners in their Mixed Martial Arts Dojo. A sturdy hefty cabinet is essential.

That, or a sturdy backhand to the kids face to remind him what happens when he messes with your stereo. Control your kids before they control you.

I agree... but I don't think manufacturers intended for their speakers to be used as punching bags... my BP7001SC towers are over 100 lbs. each, but if I hit it hard enough it too will fall over, but I guess if you use the feet that they come with they are less likely to tip over.

I'm laughing right now. Boys will be boys and twins doubly so. The are normally well behaved, disciplined, respectful kids - except when they get on each others nerves and the fighting ensues.

My point was how EASILY the Mythos toppled over form a simple backfist.

I can only imagine what would happen if i bumped into the Mythos. My hipshot would knock it over just as easily - 6'2", 225LBS, and the proverbial bull in the china shop.

Anyway, I start auditioning soon and now have another point to check for on my list.

Thanks for responding and the pic from Sheep.

Penny,

I'm sorry that the humor on this thread offended you and value your interest in helping me as a neophyte techno-phobe.

Sheep meant the joke for me and I was not bothered by it. Humor has a cutting edge sometimes and what makes some laugh - infuriates others.

Listen, please continue posting as you are a valuable asset to this community and I take it upon myself to formally apologize to you for any ill feelings the pic may have caused.

My kids hit me all the time during sparring and Martial Arts has bonded us closer together. We wear protective gear and use various sized pads. My twins are twice decorated champions out of a field of 40 participants.

Penny - I think Sheep read my profile and realized that I'm a stand-up Dad who loves his kids and can take a joke.

By the way I automatically Thank Everyone who responds to a thread of mine.

No Hard Feelings and Let's Be Friends,

Eddie

highly rate ..

Greetings,

I received many recommendations for the PB ULTRA 13 Subwoofer by SVS and thank all those for responding. However, if I wanted to go with a smaller sized SUB that is phenomenal with MUSIC - what should I be looking at? The SVS is a rather large SUB and I was just wondering from a musical perspective what else is out there specifically.

Thanks,

Eddie

Cambridge SoundWorks Newton Series P300HD Powered Subwoofer
retail $999

Also, the Aperion Intimus S-12 is a excellent 12" sub. at only $599

How small do you want?

Midcow2:

My wife has to define her subwoofer size parameters. I'm really not sure of the correct answer in terms of actual dimensions. Guess I found this evening's dinner topic......

When I showed her mike c's picture of his wall of THUNDER OF THE GODS - I said "Something about this big - maybe smaller." To which I received the "look" that tells me I had better be serious in my following answers.

I will get a definite idea tonight and post. I wish I could figure out how to post my "mock up diagram on quad paper" of the living room so you can see the layout.

Thanks,

Eddie

On Topic, Fired Up, you should make a short list of all the subwoofers mentioned that would fit the bill, so we can readily compare specs and whatnot.

We can continue to add to this list until you've chosen the winnar.

Hey Penny,

SheepStar
I nearly pissed myself... :)

Sheep you rock buddy...

Ultimately, I think gaging the price bracket that Fired up is venturing into, he is looking to invest a substantial amount of $$ into a sound system here... and the utmost in SQ is evidently important IMO from what he has alluded to... In that case there are only a few positions one can take at that point, that can be had in a small footprint....

Paradigm Servo-15, Velodyne DD15 - both of which are still getting close to large, and are also starting to show their age in todays market.

JL Audio F112, F113 or the Ultra13, the Ultra13 of which is completely out of the question in the Size department or I would have bought one as well....

Or

A DIY sub, which would have infinite possibilities, and can be the utmost in SQ depending on dedication, but are definitely not the plug and play type of sub scenario.

Personally I am a bit biased right now with my recent acquisition of a F112, an incredible sub, a bit expensive, but is pretty much the best of the best in the commercial offerings... If your talking about a small form factor.

The DD-15 shows similar performance with the JL, as I linked earlier. Even for it's age is still performs very well. If the JL was more reasonable price wise it would be a no brainer.

Before ruling out PB13-U, look at these measurements !!!!
Darn.....
http://www.avtalk.co.uk/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=22950&start=0&rid=0&SQ=0

And with room gain and boundary gain you can add more than 12dB to the figures at 20Hz
If you put the sub in a corner you will get 12db more out of the sub and room gain comes in addition to that...
If I remember things correctly....

I'm not sure even Velodyne DD-15 will equal this? Perhaps DD-18

Some possible options in varying sizes and priceranges
- Martin Logan Descent
- Audio Physic Luna II
- Dynaudio Audience SUB500
- MJ Acoustic Reference 800
- There us an upcoming MJ Acoustic Reference 400
- Rel B1
- Thiel Smartsubs (Although I think they're very overpriced)
- Krix Seismic 5 (Not sure if they're available in the US)
http://www.krix.com.au/Product/Detail.aspx?p=44&id=12

Actually, I can't find the Luna II anymore on the website, wonder if it's become obsolete?

I have the Martin Logan Depth, which was around $1700, the Descent is about another $1000 or so. The Depth is phenomenal for music

If ultimate SQ is important and price be damned how about Wilson Audio's XS Subwoofer:

The Wilson Audio Specialties XS subwoofer is the most expensive, physically impractical passive subwoofer ever created. This says nothing about the product’s value, but is, in fact, a consideration for the potential customer. The XS retails for $18,200 in standard finish without a crossover or power amplifier (Wilson will supply a crossover for an additional $4000). This alone makes it a limited-production piece that is a rarity to hear outside of an electronics show such as the CES.

The XS is over eight feet tall and weighs over 700 pounds plus another hundred or so for the crate.

Produces "massive amounts of bass," but also "completely disappears into the system"; "the soundstage expands, exposing the ambient cues hidden in the recording for the first time".

Nice suggestion about the Wilson's....

My opinion....... if you want the really best there is period, I'm not so sure about the Wilson's... And you cannot really call the Wilson products good looking, at least I won't

You could buy a whole bunch of SVS PB13-Ultra and stack them, and you'll still have something that's smaller and cheaper than the Wilson's. If you stack 4 PB13-Ultra's at each corner of the front wall, you'll still be at < $ 12.000 and they're still less then the 8 feet of the Wilson's.

IIf the room is constructed so that the sub's are not that much visible, that would be a pretty well sounding sub system, much better than the Wilson's, I think :cool:
