.....other than SVS???

Greetings,

I received many recommendations for the PB ULTRA 13 Subwoofer by SVS and thank all those for responding. However, if I wanted to go with a smaller sized SUB that is phenomenal with MUSIC - what should I be looking at? The SVS is a rather large SUB and I was just wondering from a musical perspective what else is out there specifically.

Thanks,

Eddie

The SVS PB13 is a beast. There other more compact items available, but I don't know about one that will perform as well as the SVS and be much smaller. The Velodyne DD-12, DD-15 or DD-18 are all nice. If you are looking for on-line retailers, you might want to also look at HSU, AV123 and Emotiva. All offer some nice subs. AV123 has had their BMF-1 (I wonder what that stands for) subwoofer in the works for quite some while. It won't be compact by any measure, but I do suspect it too will be a beast.

Emotiva has offered a package with two 12" subs and an amplifier:

Of course you also have the SVS SB12-Plus, though this is no way in the league of the PB-13. But it is small.

And there's always this:

I would assume (silly me) that if SVS recommended the PB-13 for you that you have a large room to fill with bass.

Another suggestion Look into JL Audio....

They have both the F112, and F113, which are expensive, but if your looking for top quality products for music, they are potentially some of the best avail.

I don't own one, but as of late have been more interested in something with a small footprint, save for going the DIY route...

Otherwise, Paradigm Servo .v2 as well as the Velodyne DD models, which incorporate a built in "on screen" Eq, to allow for in room performance feedback and adjustability...

Or you could get an Outboard Velodyne SMS-1 for EQ on any sub.

You didn't mention a budget, and maybe you could remind us of your room size :)

Dual Subs will smooth out response quite nicely...

I hear that the HSU subs are great for music, but I'm not sure if you would consider them to be too large as well.

SB-12 Plus

I needed a smaller sub so I went with the SVS SB12-Plus. Two of these might be a good alternative to the SVS Ultra sub.

Room size is 20' L x 14' W with 8' ceilings. Open floor plan with large archways separating other rooms. Floor is 100% carpeted.

SUB budget $1600 to $2500 ---They really have to SHINE on Music only sessions for me.

Eventually, we will also buy room treatments - bass traps, etc. For now I'm just focusing on the gear. Everyone keeps saying what a beast the SVS PB ULTRA 13 is and this is putting my wife off. She does not want a GIANT-SIZED SUB in room.

Here is a picture of 4 SVS subs, for size comparison for you...

The 2 on the left are SVS-PB12 Plus/2's, on the right is the PB12-Plus
On top is the SB12-Plus.

The Ultra13 is similar in size (in Between) the Plus/2 and the Plus.

Subs I mentioned, Paradigm Servo .v2, JL Audio F112 & F113 are inbetween the large subs and smallest sub, as would be the Velodyne DD-series. Any of these subs listed will be way more then enough for that medium size room, infact I would suggest that the SVS SB12-Plus would suffice as well... As its pounds, cleanly and clearly in my 1800 cu ft room, and has room to boot. Sealed is a good choice for music...

The other subs mentioned here in this thread are also good choices....

"On top is the SB12-Plus."

That looks more like what she has in mind. Although I like the look of the JL Fathom 110 series. I have to check if the SVS SB-12 Plus is still for sale.

Open to more ideas.

Anyone know the small Velodyne sub I saw in Ad? 9 1/2" x 91/2" x 9 1/2" were the dimensions i think.

The two Emotiva subs are sealed boxes about the same size as the SVS SB-12. Two subs and the amp for only $999. I know there's some comments in this forum somewhere about that combo. It was at the 2007 Audioholics "State of the CEU" Party. I got a chance to play with them. To be honest, I can't see how they can sell them for that cheap and make money.

EDIT: found the article

Mike & crosiev, those are some seriously wicked looking subs...

So happy they made it safely over the long journey...

They definitely don't fit into the Small Form Factor do they, nor does the output, but SQ is top notch eh...

He's waiting on another seriously over the top sub... should be sweet... :)
Aren't you getting a Elemental Designs A7-450 ?
