I have a Onkyo 805 that I have all of my video inputs hooked up to and until tonight I had a single RCA running to my projector. When I watched a DVD and changed the volume on the reciever I could see it on the screen. Tonight I upgraded to a HDMI out on my DVD player and HDMI running to my projector and have lost this function on my DVD player but when I switch to my Wii I can see the volume change on the screen . Can anyone help me. Thanks in advance.

The OSD might not be supported through all the different types of outputs on your receiver. Help will soon be on the way. Lots of Onkyo guys here. :)

I just read the Audioholics review on this receiver yesterday, and I believe that you need to tell the receiver what type of display output you're using to send the On Screen Display in the proper format. To quote the review:

To get the OSD running, the first step is to consider the video connection used for the main monitor: HDMI, component, S-video, or composite video, and set the output mode using the switch labeled HDMI OUT under the front flap. Repeatedly pressing this button will cycle through these alternates while the TX-SR805’s front LED display shows the current setting if the default does not match the current monitor connection.

Other than that, how do you like the receiver?

I love the 805 I can tell a big dif between it and my old Sony. I have got my HDMI set for the monitor out and can watch DVDs and play my Wii (the Wii is using the same HDMI cable to the projector). The problem that I am having is that when I turn the volume up when I play the Wii I can see it on the screen (projector) but when I switch to DVD which uses the same HDMI cable I do not see the volume change on the screen.

Don't think I can help you with that, and I read that Onkyo phone support involves a looooong wait on hold. Good luck, and post back what you find. I'm looking forward to getting an 805, but am hoping someone will run another special on them in the under $700 range like CC did for $629 and $699 in November and December:eek:....

Thanks for the help. I did find one thing out today. If I remove my HDMI cable that runs from the DVD player to the reciever and use a RCA I then can see the volume change on the screen. This realy does not make sense becaue I am using the same HDMI cable running from the reciever to my projector:confused:. Can anyone explain this? BTW CircuitCity has the 805 on sale right now for $700.

I think the lack of the on-screen display occurs because your receiver treats an HDMI input also going out through an HDMI cable as a "pass-through." In other words, the receiver just passes along the video data from the HDMI source directly to the HDMI out without any internal manipulation, as if the DVD player and projector were directly connected to each other. If you input something from another cable type (like your Wii and RCA cables), the receiver has to process it to go out through HDMI, thus your seeing the OSD of the receiver's volume. The same is true if something comes in HDMI but goes out via RCA (or other) cables. My Yamaha does the same thing, thus no volume display on the projector when using my HDMI DVD, but it will appear when connected to my TV tuner that uses component cables. I don't know of a way to force the receiver to add its OSD to the HDMI out since the HDMI pass-through is automatic.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Kevin
