OSD does not work on RX-V1400

I have been lurking on this site for awhile now and find it to be very information and helpful. &nbsp;OSD does not work on the 480p/1080i input on my TV when using the component video out on this amp. &nbsp;If I use the 480i/480p input on my TV it works great. &nbsp;I called Yamaha and they said OSD is a 480i signal only, this is a real bummer as I have a Progressive scan DVD player and a HDTV deocoder and I have to use the 480p/1080i input if I want OSD and keep from switching inputs on my TV. &nbsp;Does anyone know if the 2400 is the same way? &nbsp;Also, whats a good receiver that ouputs OSD on a 480ip1080i component ouput.</font>

To my knowledge, no receiver or preamp outputs OSD via 1080i signal for a very good reason, picture degradation. &nbsp;You should be able to access the OSD when you press stop on your DVD player though.</font>

<font color='#000000'>Even when my DVD player is stopped OSD is garbled. &nbsp;I should add that no matter what input source I select its the same way when usng the 480p/1080i input. &nbsp;The only fix is to use the 480i/480p input. &nbsp;What do you mean when you say the picture quality will degrade? &nbsp;When OSD in on it takes over the screen and you cant see any video so even if the picture degraded I cant see it anyway. &nbsp;Do you mean I should not use the component inputs on my amp and go directly to TV? &nbsp;I thought the 1400 had decent BW on the component inputs to handle HD material. &nbsp;

A couple more questions but off topic. &nbsp; When I listen to music, either FM or CD, I like to scan the TV and see whats on but as soon as I select Tuner or CD on the Amp I lose my DTV picture. &nbsp;Can I do both at the same time other than hooking DTV directly to my TV? &nbsp;

I use the receiver as a pre/pro and for some reason I have to turn on the A side as I wont get any sound other than my Left and Right. &nbsp;My previous Yamaha did not require this and it stated to turn of A and B if usings preouts. &nbsp;I do not like the way the volume works, it seems like I have to crank it to about -10 for THK reference which shows about halfway and my other amp only had to go 1/4 for same DB level. &nbsp;The amp gets fairly warm as well even though I am not using the amp section.

Can I use the back surround channels on the amp if I deceide to add some back speakers later on. &nbsp;Would I have to buy a 2 channnel amp or could I just plug the speakers into the amp.</font>

Just to dwell a little more on your earlier problem regarding OSD, i know of some audio and video philes who do not use their plasma HDTVs to display OSD. &nbsp;They use another smaller LCD screen or TV right beside &nbsp;their amp set-up to display OSD. &nbsp;I think multi-channel preamps usually have a number of video monitor output for this. &nbsp;And small LCD monitors or TV aren't that expensive for this purpose. That should eliminiate your problem of swithcing from one resolution mode to another. &nbsp; Just my 2 cents.</font>

My Yamaha can do this, it's called background video. Try first pressing an input from the audio group followed by an input from the video group.


I don't think any receiver supports OSD via a progressive output.</font>

<font color='#000000'>OSD might be affected by the fact that maybe the input is set for 480p or upconverted to progressive like 480p, 540p, or 720p.  I've heard about this problem with other receivers from other companies.

<font color='#000000'>That's supposed to work - my 2400 manual says to first switch to the video source, then the audio source.

Is it related to the fact you are using the component output? &nbsp;Try it with the S-Video output.</font>

You should be able to hook up the back surrounds to the amp in the Yamaha.</font>

I tried what you said about selecting video source first and that works, thanks.  I couldnt find reference to it in my manual.

My display shows a volume level, its a bar level that increases when I turn up the volume plus it shows the db level as well.

One other thing I noticed and may be related to me cranking the volume so its thx reference.  With older receiver, especially when listening to loud CD recordings, I did not need to turn it up very high.  With the 1400 it seems to &quot;normalize&quot; the sound no matter what source I have selected.  I guess its like having dynamic range selected to min or nighttime mode on all the time.  Its like this even when I select direct stereo.

So far though I am very happy with the sound, seperation in movies is great and I cannot pinpoint surround sound like I did in my old amp.  Once I get to playing around more with all the different settings I,m sure I,ll love this receiver more.

Another fix for the OSD that I think will work is to use s-video or composite video as the video source passes through the component video no problem.</font>
