Optimum subwoofer location

I had always heard that the best place to position a subwoofer is towards the front. I was thinking of putting mine along the back wall besides the couch beneath an end table. I am off base, pardon the pun?

Best I can suggest is to try it. All it may cost you is a little bit of time and the price of a longer cable if you need one.
