Optical connection Covers came off

I have been recently experimenting with different digital cables optical vs coax and types etc.. I have had 2 of the little doors that fold in when you plug in a optical cable come off when removing optical cables to swap out some different ones while trying to hear a difference from more expensive to extremely cheap wallmart types. Mostly all i accomplished was the doors/covers for the inputs coming off. Has this happened to anyone else and how do you get them back on? What can be used in their place to keep dust out if they can not be put back? Thanks for any input. Curt

Lesser expensive receivers don't have shutters over the doors for toslink connections but instead have little plugs that simply plug into the holes. Those plugs are easily lost, but do their job and keep dust out. Don't know where you can pick some up, but I would start at Radio Shack.

I borrowed the plug that was in the dvd player port and plugged one but the size is not a good fit. Also there is a flat metal piece which is what pushes the little door closed which gets in the way of installing the plug causing it not to sit in the port flush dosent seem to be doing a very good job.

If all you are trying to accomplish is sealing the port from dust, maybe I should introduce you to my best friend, aka duct tape.
