i just bought a astro a40 headset and mixamp (astrogaming.com) and i have it plugged in with optical and when i play a game i hear a crackle during exploslosions (airstrike in cod4) and i hear it alot in a game like deadspace (if u guys play games which i hope someone does that can help me)

now i hear it ni both ear cups the customer service from the site said it is most likely the mix amp but try a new cable just incase and i dont have a new cable to try it with and i was wondering is it the optical cable or is it the mixamp

i dont want to buy a cable for no reason since i have no need for another optical cable

I really doubt that is the fault of the optical cable. It sounds like something is clipping in the sound playback. I don't know how the mixer is setup with your configuration, so I can't really help, but one thing I would try is to turn the volume down in both the game sound control and the computer sound panel, and see what happens. If there is a physical volume knob on the headset, turn that down too. Than turn each of the up one at a time so you can at least isolate where the clipping is happening.

There's nothing an optical cable can do to cause the crackle unless it's bent too tightly or kinked. If the fiber is bent it curved, it can break the continuity of the light but that wouldn't be a crackle.

If you changed the audio level of any sources, back them down. Exceeding 0dB causes this sound and in digital audio, there's no +2dB or anything like that. It stops at -0dB.
