I totally agree jcPanny! OPPO seems like an awesome company and very quick to respond to questions. I noticed you're interested in an LCD TV. Have you checked out OPPO's new LCD TV? It even has a DVD player attached!

Sure...nice tv for setting up a ht in your bathroom where the toilet seat is the sweet spot

Whoa! Would one of you pros just tell me what I should do here please?
Later today I will be setting up my oppo 970 in conjunction with an Onkyo TX-SR674. System will be used to play DVD's only. (By DVD I am referring to movies on DVD-clueless as to what precise format they may be in). I have another complete system for listening to music CD's. TV is a Vizio GV42L lcd which accepts HDMI.

I plan to run HDMI cables from the oppo to the AV receiver, but am totally confused as to how best to configure the oppo after reading the above posts.
If I am at all close, it appears you are making setting changes which either have the oppo processing the audio or making the AV receiver do it-correct?

In any event, how would you suggest I set the oppo?

Have your read the TWO user manuals that come with the 970HD, one of which is written by Audiohics staffers?

BTW, Oppo is about to release the DV-981HD, basically combining the best of the 971HD with the best of the 970HD - i.e. imagine a OPDV971HD with SACD and HDMI (1.1, alas) and also with 1080p Faroudja upscaling as well. It may not be a Denon DVD-5910CI but it won't cost $3500 either!

Oppo 970HD with Denon AVR 74xtvi

Hi Krabapple,

I just bought the Oppo 970HD, read your September thread about the set up with a AVR Denon 74txvi (I have the same reveiver).

From a sound std point all is working fine through HDMI - which is great because I bought it to be able to use SACD and DVD-A.

But from an image std point, I am not able to get the image through HDMI - I had to use the composite output in oderto get some image.

May be it is because I am using currently a std CRT and the TV cannot accept the DMI upconverted image ?

I can't find any setting neither with the Oppo or with the Denon receiver to route Audio and Video throught HDMI. Do you have any idea ?

The receiver in question is not a denon, but rather a pionner 74 txvi? If your tv dosen't have the ability for hdmi connection then you can use a composite connection. I would recommend component cable but you still won't get full upconversion for your dvd's. There is no way around this issue. The only way you will get full effect from the hdmi is your tv must be compliant.

Your are correct the receiver is pioneer (my typo !).

I was just expecting that as far as I was routing through the receiver, I would be able to get a "downgraded" signal to the TV without having to connect component or composite.
