Please make specific comparisons to other DVD players specifically the Denon's. Most people's reviews just state it's got nice PQ but don't compare it to other players.

Thanks.

Question

Can this be bought in Canada to anyone's knowledge?

Yes. There's a reseller called "Only Best Rated", and they're located in the north end of Toronto. They'll ship stuff out within Canada, or you can pick it up. If you do decide to pick it up, call ahead. When I was considering buying one, I went up there at an agreed upon time, and nobody was home. I rang the doorbell for ten minutes, and nada. (Yes, it's a house out of which they operate.) OBR is really good with e-mails, though; they always responded very quickly. You can find the link on Oppo's website -- click on the "where to buy" link.

Most of it doesn't make much sense to me, but I understand that it beat players well over its price range. I also found many glorious (consumer) reviews on amazon (which seems to have one of the best deals for buying this puppy. $199 plus like $10 shipping. I stumbled across this dvd player last month and fell in love with it. Hopefully the audioholics review sheds some light upon this overlooked player. Too bad they couldn't go that one extra step and include SACD with that plethora of formats it supports. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers, and on a tight budget it doesn't get much better.

I needed to replace mr Samdung HD-850 and couldn't resist trying the Oppo. I purchased one via the internet directly from the Oppo website on Friday. I got an email a few minutes later and the DVD player showed up Monday at 11AM.

From a laypersons perspective it is the nicest picture I've seen on my TV. I have a 43" HDTV DLP from Samsung  , great TV but DVD players from them ....

High def satellite looks awesome but DVD playback was never all that satisfying. With the Oppo I have tried a few titles already. Anything LOTR extended looks astonishing, Underworld (mastered in HD) looks incredible and samples from several other movies in my library were equally stunning.

The odd thing about this player is that it doesn't look all that impressive, the remote is really cheap (but my RXV2500 remote was able to learn 90% of the Oppo remote), the DVD tray feels like it's going to break everytime I use it and the buttons on the front of the player are not very responsive. Oppo service tech says this is normal for the player, btw.

What it lacks in physical appeal and build quality it certainly seems to make up for in all other ways. Blacks on my DVD playback are now INK black instead of very dark grey. Imagery is almost as good if not AS good as my HD satellite picture. Excellent setup menu with comprehensive control of the players systems. Lots of audio tweaks. Seamless transitions during playback of movies. Can tweak setup while watching a movie. Can defeat almost every feature if needed. Audio playback is flawless (to me).

I'm not sure there is anything that can come close to it in terms of features, internal quality and price. I love it. I'm excited about rewatching my favorite movies with it. And until blu-ray or whatever the next new must-have format is becomes more of a necessity and less of an option, I'll be happily sticking with Oppo.

I highly recommend this player to anyone looking for a universal player. BTW, it plays DVD-A's through multi-channel output but not SACD's.

I had a slight hangup (one of my receiver review samples was nonfunctional) but should hopefully have it ready soon. I am waiting on comparing the audio against some other players and also re-checking black levels.

Anyone using the OPPO with a Samsung 68 series yet? Preferably the 6768?
If so, how does the material look?

Thanks,
Wiley

to the 1 or 2 people who have the player: Are you using the supplied DVI cable? Also, straight to TV or routed via receiver? My current TV-I-Can't-Actually-Afford obsession is the 70" JVC HD-ILA. Only problem is only 1 hdmi, and no dvi. So I would need to put the hd cable through component. Not that big of a deal when I thik about it, but a true "videoholic" would be throwing a fit I suppose. Then again, a true videoholic thinks he needs a denon 3910 for a good picture.

You can use a DVI -> HDMI cable for your "dream TV"

You have to use the DVI output to take advantage of the Oppo video processing features. The component outputs only put out 480p, and very poorly.

My bad, my AVR7300 converts incoming 480i to 480p signals.

:)
