Oppo DVD player Review

I also heard that, but I thought it just had to do with a different remote and some upgraded software.

They told us they were trying to sell out of the first one first. People kept making such a fuss over the first one they didn't feel inclined to hurry up on the second generation model.

So essentially, it's y'all's fault. :p

I just got one of these, and I'm having one little problem--I can't figure out how to make it resume a DVD from the point I stopped watching it. Am I missing something obvious, or does this player actually not have that capability?

Just a quick update on the Oppo now that I've had it for awhile:

I am totally in love with the picture quality. It is a perfect marriage for my 43" DLP. I don't know if it would work the same on any display but for me it's all Aces! Like I said before, the build quality is not great at all. It is still annoying to work with the disc tray and buttons on the player itself but the sound and video playback make those frustrations melt away into A/V bliss just moments after hitting play.

The best way to describe this little machine would be like wrapping a 3 carat diamond ring in cellophane instead of a pretty, satin-lined ring box. If that makes any sense at all hehe

Cheers,

BM

I actually cracked open my oppo and I have to disagree.

I think the player has a fine build quality.

I'm confused by "annoying to work with the disc tray and buttons on the player itself "... what do you mean?

They tray is flimsy and bends down with even slight pressure. The eject, power, stop, play/pause buttons are slow to respond to pressing. Last night I had to just keep hitting stop rapidly in order for playback to stop. Also I had to press eject 3 times before it actually did. I contacted oppo support and was told that this is normal for the player. The remote control is cheaply made and doesn't backlight. I would have happily payed more for the same playback quality but better build. From what I have read elsewhere this is a common complaint. In fact, it is even mentioned in the only review I've seen of the player.

Don't get me wrong, as I said in my earlier, I love the player but the build quality is vastly different from the playback quality in my opinion.

Here is a direct quote from the service department at Oppo regarding the DVD player:

"There is a slight delay with the Buttons on the front of the OPDV971H.
Press them hard and be patient with their response.

The button response is a software issue. The actual relay themselves are tripped when the button is pressed no matter how hard you do it, it's the software polling time of those buttons that sucks. So they tell you press it hard, so you're pushing it longer so it'll be caught by the delayed polling times.

The tray issue was brought up on AVS Forums but one brave soul took picture of him pushing down on the tray and actually bending it down at an almost 45-degree angle an it wouldnt break.

Hhhmmm,

Thanks for the tip. I'll experiment with holding the buttons longer when I get home tonight. There have been plenty of timed when I press eject and wait..... nothing happens, etc..

It will be nice to outsmart this durn thing for a change. Although there is some theraputic value to mashing buttons :p

Agreed that button smashing does in fact relieve stress.

The button polling sucks most when the disc is loading.
