I'm setting up a new system with an Oppo DV-980H into a Denon AVR-2308CI via HDMI, and I'm pretty much a newbie with setting up a HT.
The Oppo manual suggests speaker and audio settings that should be used if your receiver supports HDMI v1.2a. It says the surround speakers should be set to "large" and the surround back speaker should be set to "small" for a 7.1 setup. But, in trying to do this it seems my back speaker setting is being driven by my surround speaker setting...if I set the surround to "small", then the back sets itself to "small" and "large" is grayed out. Similarly if I set the surrounds to "large", then the back sets itself to "large" and "small" is grayed out.
Also, I noticed when running the THX Optimizer on my Pirates of the Caribbean DVD, I got nothing out of my back speaker (I have a single back surround speaker, 6.1 setup). When the Optimizer showed that it was driving the back speakers, I was getting audio out of both L and R surrounds, but nothing out of the back. However I noticed when watching the movie that I was in fact getting audio from the back speaker.
So, what's the deal? Anyone know why the speaker settings on my Oppo are functioning like that? Anyone know why the THX Optimizer test did what it did?
I know my speakers are connected properly because I ran the auto setup procedure on my Denon 2308 and all the speakers worked fine during the setup.
Thanks if you can help!
