Oppo DV-980H or Sony DVP-NS77H

I have the Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray player and I do not like its dvd playback. A few day days ago I bought the Sony DVP-NS77H. It is a decent dvd player and it has better dvd playback the my Panny blu-ray player. Now I'm thinking of returning it and getting the Oppo DV-980H. Now my questions are:
1. Is the 980H worth the extra money, even though I just want to watch dvd movies on it?
2. Is the picture quality better on the 980h?
3. Will it provide better dvd playback than my Panasonic blu-ray player?

I have the 970H which is now replaced by the 980H.

My Oppo provides better upconversion of SD DVD than my HD-A1 or my Samsung BDP-1400.

And then you get a universal player capable of SACD, DVD-A, HDCD for sound and DivX for Video.

For multichannel analogs, the Oppo player, at least my 970H, provides speaker setup including speaker level adjustments from -10 dB to +10 dB. That in itself, makes the Oppo worthwhile. However, this player can play SACD and DVD-A using HDMI set to PCM.

I haven't seen the BD-30s capabilities, but the 980 is a very good upscaling player. No player is going to make SD look like HD though. Is it worth the extra money over the Sony? Yes - the Oppos are among the best upscaling players around.

I decided that I am going to return the Sony DVP-NS77H and order the Oppo DV-980H, because I read that the 980 has better dvd upscaling than the DVP-NS77H, it has better analog sound for cd playback, and it would have better resale value than the Sony due to its reputation of being a solid audio/video player.

The 983 will be the successor to the 980, and will be released soon. Exactly when, I don't know. But if you can hold out for a while, it might be worth your while, as it has some notable improvements over the 980. It uses ABT 102 deinterlacing chip and ABT 1010 scaling engine, which sounds pretty shiny. It also has RS232 and IR in and out ports on the rear. This player is basically the processing of a VP50 added right inline with a 980.

I don't know what some of that means, but it certainly sounds impressive!

cheers,
