OPPO BDP93 and Component Video Outputs

Hello
My Pioneer Elite DVD player has finally died. It sourced component video to my still functioning and healthy Pioneer Elite Rear Projection TV (1080I resolution) component video only input.

I am no position financially to invest in a 60" inch plus Plasma or overhead projector, so the use of HDMI to fully exploit Blue Ray 1080P will have to wait.

Because of the politics surrounding HDMI, I have been told to buy a 2011 version of the OPPO BDP93 so that Blue Ray discs through component video outputs will be displayed at 1080I on my Pioneer Elite rear projector and 480P for std DVDs. Models built in 2012 will perversely scale the Blue Ray component outputs to 480P. Standard DVDs will play at 480P.

1. Is the advice above valid?
2. Have I always been viewing my std DVDs at 480P? I am not aware that my old Pioneer Elite DVD player performed any kind of up-scaling.

When I come into the big bucks I will retire the Rear Projection Pioneer Elite and join the rest of the consumer victims that are part of the world of HDMI manipulation.

Thank you
Howard Flemming

Actually, I think that is correct. The Oppo will only output 720p/1080i for non-restricted content over component. I think if your display is able to upscale to 1080i though, you would be able to set the Oppo for 480i, you will still end up with 1080i, but it will not be with the better processing of the Oppo. So unless you do intend to get another TV very soon, I wouldn't bother spending $500 on this player when most less expensive players will give you the same thing right now until you upgrade.
