Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player Review

The only thing that I didn't see mentioned is the DVD function region free? The reason that I bring it up is there is quite a bit of DVD concert content out there in region 2 PAL that isn't available in NTSC Region 1. Two of my conventional DVD players are region free and PAL/NTSC agnostic.
Well the box says all regions but I do not have any to test it with.

Nice review on BDP-83, Clint.

I do have one question regarding the ratings you'd provided in your score card. You noted the analogue audio performance at four stars, while you rated the high definition audio performance at five stars, but didn't mention anything in your listening tests that would lead you to this concusion. Was this while listening to multichannel audio, soundtracks with newer HD codecs, two-channel, etc?

Could you elaborate as to how you decided to rate the two options as you have? Thanks in advance... -TD

For the PS3, the 60G has SACD for sure. I do believe the second generation 80G did as well, though not sure about the 40G. Not sure about the current models (80G and 160G). So that would mean if current models don't have it, then that would be a true statement, but not all models historically.
Both original models of the PS3 supported SACD, but after that only the models that also supported PS2 software through software emulation also supported SACD. Those were the 60 GB version that initially came out in Europe, and the first 80 GB version that came out in the USA.

Any idea what the on-board bass management sets the subwoofer cross-over at? Is this adjustable? Sorry if I missed it in the review.

I have been lucky to have had a unit for a few months now. I can honestly say that I love my Oppo! I moved into BluRay purchasing this unit and replacing my Denon DVD1600. The 2 channel output for analog is amazing! I feel that I now have a better sound stage with better 3 dimensionality when listening to CD's. My Arcam receiver doesn't decode the new codec's so I'm using the 7.1 analog outs on this unit and they also sound fantastic (although the 2 channel are a bit better in my opinion). The picture quality is also fantastic on my Pioneer Pro530. I whole heartedly support this unit and will recommend it to anyone looking for a universal player that is willing to spend the money on it! Heck, I'll recommend it even to those who only want to spend 200 bucks!!!

Thanks RMK! Seems like a very good overall player. Better than the BDP-S550. I like the SACD capability too.
The BDP-83 is the one box, one cable solution I have wanted for quite a while. The AV performance is as good or better than other devices I have owned and the load speeds are a nice side benefit. The only thing that will displace it is an HT computer with HDMI audio (HD codex) support and that seems like is a ways off.

Did they fix multi-channel DSD with a firmware upgrade or is this a case of the player needing to have 1080p resolution set to support 5.1 DSD?

I don't know if they fixed it, but it does state that very clearly in the manual that the player has to be set to 1080p for it to work properly.

I think, oppo should release a simpler version of bluray- universal audio, that can play pal plus divx and region free for bluray at lower price!

Usually, when I read such a glowing review, and have some experience with the product, I wonder if the reviewer is writing about the same product. And I always suspect that the reviewer is being less than completely objective. But this review of the 83 is what I would have written, if I understood the subject better. ;-)

Hey Peter, how are you?

Kris (Deering), the guy that writed the review is a very fair and objective person.
He'll tell you straight up with his findings. I know, I've been reading his reviews since he first started.

That Oppo Universal Blu-ray player is the real thing. There is nothing else like it for the price, period. :)

Thanks sleepysurf for the information on the Dacs.

To add further to this, the Cirrus Logic Crystal Dac, the CS4398 (2-channel stereo Dac in one chip), is the exact same Dac used in the Onkyo TX-SR806 and the Integra DTR-7.9 A/V receivers (the 806 and the 7.9 have 4 or 5 of these dual Dacs for all 8 channels).

And the Cirrus Logic Crystal CS4382A Dac (8-channel Dac in one chip) is used in the Marantz AV8003 Surround Processor, as well in the Marantz SR8002 and SR7002 A/V receivers.

These are some of the best Dacs made by Cirrus Logic.

* And finally, to add a comment to the review by Clint, I would have like a deeper analysis into SACD (DSD bitstream), DVD-Audio handling of the various resolutions, and HDCD outputs through Analog (RCA jacks) and Digital (HDMI, Coaxial & Optical outs, through an A/V receiver with HDCD decoder, like some Denon and Marantz models).

But in the end, I do agree that this is a very nice Blu-Ray Universal player. Perhaps not fully "cooked" just yet...

Please forgive if what I'm asking deserves an obvious answer, but as i really don't know....

If I connect my BDP (I'll receive it in a couple of weeks, I'm at Argentina...) trough HDMI 1.3 for video an lossles audio, It will be better if I also connect it for stereo by RCA (analog output)....

Thanks....
