Oppo BDP 105 for 2 channel

I'm looking to purchase the Oppo 105 for my 2 channel set up, and skipping an AVR. I will just be using the "HDMI in" for my cable box. I'm mainly concerned about the audio set up, if I hook it up to my Peachtree sonaAMP w/ balanced XLR cables will I have any problems? Do I need to any additional hardware to go along with this? This will all be powering a set of SVS ultra towers and I'm planning on picking up an SVS sealed 12" sub.

If you add svs sealed sub, you would have to go with top end - SB13-Ultra if you set on using balanced interconnects - They are nice to have, but in most cases in home environments - the benefits are marginal at best.

Q: Do you already own sonaAMP or planning to purchase it?

I dont have one currently, it just what I was planning on buying because the specs seemed pretty good, and it was within my budget. 1k

Innitaly I wanted to buy an AVR, but it seems like for the money I can get better sound going this route, plus I will have a top notch blueray for similar money. I just wouldn't use the majority of the options on most AVRs since I'm only running 2 channels.

As far as the sub goes, I was only planning on running coaxial, and and hooking it up to the analog input, but now that you mention it I don't know if that's possible with using the two balanced inputs for my front 2 speakers.

It can work for 2ch, and actually serve as a source for a couple of other devices because I've used it this way. I didn't hear any audio advantage using it this way. The bass management is simple and fully manual, but it works.

Rather than an AVR, I'd consider a stereo receiver which typically does have a sub preamp out (no bass management) or something like the Outlaw RR2150 which is a stereo receiver with bass management.

The main reason I have stayed away from a traditional stereo reciver is the lack of hdmi inputs. Due to funds this will have to be a dual purpose setup for me, so I need the HDMI in.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out what amp in the $1000 range would pair best with this. That's why I was thinking peachtree because it had the xlr connectors and the advertised power seemed to be more than enough for my set up currently. But I'd be happy to check out any other suggestions.

You can do it but something like previous year's Denon, Yamaha or Marantz top line AVR (4520, 5200, 7009 3040 etc.) will do a better job and you won't suffer from sound quality. I own a 105, HA-1, and I have very capable speakers, so I know.

Subject: Oppo 105 Zoom Control: Can Arrow Buttons Recenter Zoomed Image in BD Playback?

Fully functional zoom control is invaluable as I watch a lot of vintage content with a wide range of aspect ratios.

I love my Oppo 95, but unlike my Pioneer LX500, when I zoom in on a scene from a BD** movie the Oppo 95’s up, down and sideways arrow buttons don’t work for centering the desired part of the zoomed image on the screen. Nor will it work for DVDs.

Someone once said that the Oppo 105 and 203 arrow buttons do work to center a selected part of a zoomed image. Assuming you still own and use the Oppo 105, could I trouble you to verify this zoom control functionality?

IMPORTANT: Please do not rely on what’s said in the 105’s manual about using the arrows to likewise pan still photos on p. 48.

The 95’s manual also says as much, yet those arrow buttons on the remote won’t allow you to recenter the zoomed image. A reply from Oppo support confirmed this. Therefore, an actual test of the 105’s arrow buttons to center on the screen your selected part of the zoomed BD movie image is the only way to be sure.

NOTE: As you may know, many BDs which were authored with BD-Java have zoom controls disabled; this is mentioned in all Oppo BD player manuals. These include most BD titles from Universal, Sony, Criterion Collection and ShoutFactory.

But except for those with BD-Live features, you should be able to zoom on almost all BD titles from Warners, Kino Lorber and Powerhouse (Indicator) Films.

Again, almost any non-BD Live BD title released by Warners or Kino Lorber will have zoom control enabled for you to see if the arrow buttons let you recenter a zoomed image.
