OPPO 981HD can't play HD-DVD disks

Well I bought the HD-D2 from costco and have yet to open the box. I have a 1080p tv and thought what was the point of keeping a 1080i player. I might keep it for my 1080i tv in my bedroom. I thought the price was right though with the discount. I just can't make up my mind on this.

Even if the player's output was 1080p at 24 frames per second (which the source data rate), your Westinghouse would still be required to convert to 1080p at 60 frames per second. Therefore, the output of 1080i is as good as it gets for you.

For those that remember what it is like to be new at something, Thanks for your understanding! I was on this forum late one night and thought that I read that the OPPO 981HD was a HD player. When I found it on Amazon.com web site I thought I had a deal. Thanks for sharing where I went wrong in my understanding. I'll be returning the player with hopes of finding a HD player that up-converts as nice as the 981HD does.

For those that shared other comments, well the world has a funny way of remembering you, especially when you too ask ignorant questions. I hope the person on the other end will be a little more understanding.

Agreed, Mlail, the ignorance is that of treating a neophyte with inferiority. In my experience, those that know the least tend to know it the loudest. Those that take on an air of superiority normally have no cause to do so. Don't take it personally and enjoy the DVD player. It is a good one.

If you want to play HD-DVD's you have two options from Toshiba. One is a 1080i (interlaced) resolution unit and other is 1080p (progressive) unit. They should cost about $300 and $500 respectively.

I certainly understand your situation. I got mine from Crutchfield for the mistake price of $199 delivered and I'm very happy with it. Mine will eventually go into my bedroom where my Sharp 45" only accepts 1080i. In the meantime I'm using it on my Toshiba 56H80 with great results. So far it has played all HD movies over compenent at 1080i and I found a regular DVD where it upconverted to 1080i over compenent. All other regular DVD's are played at 480P. So the upconverting is software specific not player specific. I've noticed that the picture quality with regular DVD's is better than my Sony DVP-NS700 that's over five years old. The picture quality if very good with regular DVD's.

As with anything you buy, do your homework.

Oppo seems to have made the statements they needed to make to say that it doesn't play HD-DVDs or Bluray discs. Also, many other companies use the HD nomenclature in their model names, and I don't see people complaining about that.

If someone makes a mistake, they should own up to it, not blame someone else.
