OPPO 981HD can't play HD-DVD disks

Has anyone figured out how to play a HD DVD on this player? I have it using only the HDMI cable to my receivers HDMI in. The player does great with SD DVD's but when I load a HD DVD it says loading for a few minutes and then says no disk. Am I missing something? The player is new, I just got it 2 days ago.

Suggestions?

If yes: HaHa! Jolly good.

If no: The Oppo is an upconverting DVD player. It does not play HD-DVDs or Blu*Ray discs.

I'm not surprised by the confusion. After all, HD is in the name of the DVD player. A person would think that a DVD player with HD in its name plays HD DVD discs. Does Oppo ever say in its advertising that it doesn't? If not, this is very misleading.

These misunderstandings are exactly what are being talked about in Clints new article thread and also why this website has been created, among others. Stay and read up, seems as if you have a lot to learn. I know these past few months have done me wonders. I know things I never thought of before.

If you go to their website, it says clearly that "Note: The DV-981HD does not play Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD discs". Look at the second bullet point under the Universal DVD Player Features section at http://oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_features.html. Seems clear to me.

Go easy on the newbie, eh? We were all in his position once, and the world of HT can be pretty confusing for people just coming into it.

I agree with going easy on the newbie. And I still think that Oppo's labeling practices are intentionally misleading. They're banking on a lot of people not reading any further, and then they can say, "Oh, but we told you." Well, maybe they did, but they're still trying to slip one past you.

For those that remember what it is like to be new at something, Thanks for your understanding! I was on this forum late one night and thought that I read that the OPPO 981HD was a HD player. When I found it on Amazon.com web site I thought I had a deal. Thanks for sharing where I went wrong in my understanding. I'll be returning the player with hopes of finding a HD player that up-converts as nice as the 981HD does.

For those that shared other comments, well the world has a funny way of remembering you, especially when you too ask ignorant questions. I hope the person on the other end will be a little more understanding.

Back to the subject at hand.
Maybe you could keep the OPPO as a spare for a bedroom, etc?
It is a great player for the price.

Toshiba A2 should do as good or better, if you have a costco membership they sell D2 which is the same thing at $199.

I have a Toshiba A1 and its upconversion on closeups is nearly as good as an HD-DVD, far away shots not as much but still good.

With SD discs the oppo and the HDA2 should be close. The oppo and the HD A20 on SD would be close, but the HD A20 has full HD capability. The XA2 IMO would win hands down because it uses a much better technology then the oppo by using the silicon optix reon HQV processing and to my knowledge this is also used by the higher end denon players.

I came accross this CNET review a while ago, and they mention the 981HD vs. the Tosh HD-A1, and they gave a slight edge to the Oppo for it's upscaling. Here's the review:

Yes I understand that you are new to all this (and yes your thread did seem to be trolling), which is why it is very important to read closely the info for a product. If you aren't sure, come here and ask before you buy because there are a lot of people who can help you.

The sale on the Toshiba players ended yesterday, so the $100 rebate is over.

My friend had the A2 and the 981 and he said the 981 is a superior upconverting player. He did end up keeping the A2 though, for HD-DVD. Note that the A2 is only 1080i, while the 981 upconverts to 1080p.

Hey dont feel too bad about it, my mom had the same thing happen to her around christmas.

Dad got his new TV set up and he wanted an HD-DVD player for it but he never got around to buying one so my mom decided to buy him one for christmas.
She went to the store and asked the associate in the electronics department for an HD-DVD player and he showed her a model and said this one will play your HD-DVD's just fine and it even records!! so she is like wow, good deal..

turns out it was just an up converting one so we took it back and got a real hd-dvd/blu ray player...

Well I bought the HD-D2 from costco and have yet to open the box. I have a 1080p tv and thought what was the point of keeping a 1080i player. I might keep it for my 1080i tv in my bedroom. I thought the price was right though with the discount. I just can't make up my mind on this.
