Hi.
I have narrowed my search for a modest 5.1 surround speaker system to either Orb Audio or Def Tech's ProCinema 800s. Has anyone heard these two systems, and can you provide insite on which you think might be better for movies/music?
Thanks so much from a newbie.
Cheers! :)

I cannot comment on the Orb Audio, but I have heard the Def Tech's. I don't know if it was the location, the way they were (or weren't) set up, but I hated the Def Techs. They hurt my ears. They were being run by a Denon 19XX receiver. There are a lot of people who love Def Techs. Many magazines love them as well. Not my cup of tea.

What did your ears tell you when you auditioned them? I would go with that. I have not heard them, but my experience is that for music, the very small speakers in general are lacking for my taste, but for movies, they maybe good enough. Broad generalities I know, but perhaps of use.

Hi. Thanks for your replies. I have listened to the Def Tech 800s, but not the Orbs, as they are direct marketed only. The 800s have a very smooth midrange but appear to be somewhat tempermental as far as placement/setup is concerned. Plus, the sub sounds a bit bloated and un-musical, which my ears do not like. I was hoping someone could offer insight into the overall sound of the orbs, whether they are tempermental regarding placement, and if the super8 sub sounds musical or not?

i run the Hsu Ventriloquist and had a listen to he HB-12 horn speaker with the VFT- MK2 sub the other day for both music and movies....etc.

I am a big fan of the Hsu VT-12 for movies etc, and whilst it is not at all shabby for music - especially considering the price, the HB-12's were very impressive...

Have a listen if you get the chance.... and hey, you did say modest....
