Onkyo Wiring Question

I bought my new Onkyo TXSR805 reciever last week...and wow, am I amazed with the sound. My question is, if I plug in my dvd player into the receiver using s-video cable and then having a component video cable plugged in to the output of the receiver going into my benq projector will this receiver upconvert this signal to 720p or 1080i? Or can all these up conversions be only handled by hdmi cable? I hope you guys get what I'm trying to ask because I am not too inclined with the video connections and set up through the receiver. Thanks.

The 805 can transcode (change video format) from s-video to component but it does not scale or deinterlace (change the resolution).

If your DVD player can upconvert 480i/p to 720p, 720p can be passed through the receiver. It's probably best to just set the DVD player to progressive scan (480p) and pass it thru the receiver to the projector and let the projector do the scaling to its native resolution.

Rick - According to the instruction manual (pages 28 and 29), the 805 cannot convert S-Video to Component if you have the HDMI output enabled. It can convert S-Video to Component if you have the HDMI output disabled, though.

MDS - Can S-Video do 480P?

No, you need to use component video for any progressive scan signal. The DVD player won't output 480p thru the s-video output.

Rick,
Nice front projector and receiver. I think it is time to upgrade the DVD player. For great DVD scalling, I would recommend one of the Oppo Digital DVD players for about $150. Alternately, you could get a PS3 for bluray for $400.

If you are stapped for cash, you can find pregressive scan DVD players (w/ component or HDMI output) for $30-40.
