Onkyo vs. Yamaha vs. Pioneer

Ok so I need a surround reciever that is also good in stereo mode for loud parties. I just purchased two Cerwin Vega CLSC-12 towers to accomodate the "party" portion of the equation and they will also be used as the two fronts for the surround mode. The recievers I am looking at are as follows:

Onkyo TX-NR801

Yamaha V1500

Pioneer 1014TX

I can get them all for roughly the same price. The Onkyo is little more $$ and the Pioneer is a little less, but I am not using $$ as a factor.

Opinions anyone?

I've tried the Pioneer, and I would go with the Yamaha.

I was also just advised that Home Theater magazine ran some tests for true wattage and the Pioneer put out 115 per channel but the Yamaha only put out 40?????

IMO, any of these receivers will give decent sound quality, but nothing will work as well as a seperate amp for those Cerwins unless you spring for a flagship receiver. I went with a 1400 & added an amp. Worked out great.

I have a pair of Cerwin Vega D7's from 1985 that are still kicking. Great speakers for sound pressure. Decent sound quality.

Have you checked into the Denon 2805 as well?

The one with the most power into 2 channels and the features you need to meet all your needs.

Do you know what is the impedance of the Vegas?. I own a pair of 280SE and in the specs they said that the impedance was 6 Ohms. They weren't telling the truth because impedance sometimes drops down to 2 Ohm and my receiver was shutting down. So, check first the Impedance of your Vegas.

If you like loud parties, maybe it's better to buy a power amp like a QSC, Crown or something like that, i think you will be happier.

O.K. I've seen the site and the tech papers say "8 Ohm compatible". I don't know what this means, but, i think any receiver would handle them fine. I guess the "8 Ohm compatible" statement refers to a non-stable Impedance but this thing doesn't drop down below 4 Ohms, i think.

As you are no doubt aware, impedance varies with frequency and even 8 ohm speakers will dip well below 8 ohms for some frequencies. I think saying speakers are '8 Ohms compatible' is using weasel words.

I think most speakers that say specifically '8 ohms' are 8 ohms at all but a few troublesome frequencies. Maybe '8 ohms compatible' means they are 8 ohms sometimes but dip well below 8 ohms far more of the time than others that simply say '8 ohms'. 8 ohms is the magic phrase to be applicable to a large segment of the market, but 8 ohms compatible sounds like a cop-out like 'digital quality' vs 'digital'.
