Onkyo TX-SR806: BE afraid!

Thanks Adam, we will check out the VSX-21, too. We're also looking at the Pioneer Elite SC 27, if we can find it locally. Not sure we want to purchase our next receiver online. Next time, I want a storefront window I can throw it through, if we have problems and they don't assist...LOL.
If you're looking locally, perhaps check out Best Buy today. There was mention on this forum that the Pioneer Elite SC-25 (I believe) was on sale in store only for $999, with the sale ending today. I can't confirm if that's true, but it might be worth calling them to check it out if that unit interests you. After all, you have 30 days to return it if you change your mind.

Adam, thanks so much for the heads up:), but due to the holiday, we missed the opportunity. We're still looking! In the meantime, we have an idle system in our living room, that churns the stomach . We're just afraid of jumping from the frying pan, into the fire.

It's rather disturbing that they have added so much to receivers, that those who just want GREAT music and MOVIES don't want. In my opinion, all it does, is portend problems for the future. Guess we won't be buying receivers that last 20 years, anymore .

Bfly. I am so sorry for your loss. I own the Onk 706 and wonder about this issue. I did buy a refurb. I was aware of the heat issues with Onkyo. I do like this unit better than the Yamaha 663 I owned. Mine does not run hot. Of course the only amp that is running is the zone 2 amp into a monster speaker selector for whole house audio. My two front speakers are active (2,0). I don't like all the features on new receivers. I'm not sure who the target market is, but it's not me. I use 10% of the capabilities. I am strongly considering going back to my 9 year old Lexicon Pre Pro. It is simplicity personified.

Thank you for sharing this issue with us. I had a 700 series that ran well, but I do know the 800 series is fire prone. For a new receiver I suggest you look at a Marantz from accessories4less. They are authorized, and usually have the best deals on the net. I've never heard of an issue with one of those receivers. If your on a really tight budget you can also look into the HK AVR 254 of ebay. The manufacturer runs great refurb deals that go in the 200s. The receiver's software isn't the greatest, but the internals are reliable.

Unfortunately heat is a side effect of computing and isn't something easily mitigated. They are doing what they can, but it will take time to find a real solution.

The 700 series has no known heat issues or reliability issues at this point and is the only line I'd buy from Onkyo. When listening to music be sure to use the pure audio mode. It will turn off everything and keep it running even cooler.

Yeah, but most of my music is display dependent- Pandora streamed through my blu ray player or CDs on my media server. I just run stereo and it's fine.
My zone 2 off the speaker selector has some long runs- 20' 14awg to the kitchen, 40' of 14awg to the office, 60' of 12awg to the bedroom. Don't think that would tax the 706 too much, but what do I know.
