Onkyo TX-SR805 - Subwoofer problem - Help!

I have Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver connected to Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 speakers.

I have recently replaced shorter RCA subwoofer cable from blue jeans with a longer cable (50ft) from monoprice in order to keep all my cables behind the walls.

I am not sure whether this change or there is a problem with subwoofer or my receiver that is causing the subwoofer to stay in stand-by mode. I have tried Audissey EQ one more time and manually fiddled with frequency settings. Nothing worked. Strangely enough, when I turn off the receiver (standby mode), green light on subwoofer comes on and needless to say this is driving me nuts!! Please help me figure out how to test whether low frequency signals are going to the subwoofer; what settings should I be having (impedance, distance, frequency, etc.,). I have set my subwoofer volume to maximum and I don't know what settings I should have in the receiver. and

Is it a powered sub? If it is then it needs to be connected to the sub output that is labeled "pre-out" and not the one that is merely labeled as subwoofer.

Have you set your fronts to fullband? If you have then you need to turn the doublebass feature on to get adequate signal to the sub.

Those are the two most common culprits.

That is weird. I don't know what to say about the above, but one of the most common troubleshooting tips is not to raise the sub's gain, but instead raising the receiver's sub output gain (and therefore lowering the knob on the sub, if desiring the same volume). This way the preamp signal will be stronger, hopefully triggering the sub effectively at lower playback volumes.

One annoying thing about Onkyo subs is that it goes into standby mode very quickly, like maybe only 15 minutes? So for a movie that has LFE stuff only every once in a while creates a number of thumps during the movie from the sub activating.

50ft is very long distance. You will need to run your subwoofer gain on the receiver very hot to get a proper working signal.

I have a 50' Monoprice cable between my 805 and a Hsu Subwoofer and did not have any level problems when I reset the system (after moving the subwoofer from upfront to near-field in the back corner).

OP, is there any chance that you placed the subwoofer cable on the wrong 805 connector? Very easy to do........

One easy cable test is just touch the open end of the subwoofer cable to some part of the 805's chassis. This should create enough of a ground loop to be able to hear 60Hz hum from the sub.

Thanks to everyone for their valuable suggestions. My special thanks to "Hicks" and "sptrout" for suggesting the pre-out subwoofer connection. It was a classic ID10T error on my part. After a while I forgot about having two 'subwoofer' connections in the back and I could not see the far end one while replacing the RCA cable. :D
