I tried my Panasonic DVD recorder and it passes video via HDMI. Is this a firmware issue with the BD player?
Thanks for all of the help so far!!!
Unfortunately it could be a firmware issue with either the BD player or the receiver.
What we do know is that the receiver works essentially.
Unfortunately the HDCP repeater handshake codes for HD devices are more complex than for an SD unit like the DVD player.
So your best bet is to make sure both units have the latest firmware.
I can guarantee one thing, if you phone Panasonic and Onkyo customer support they will blame each other!
These are the real villains.
They are a very sloppy outfit, set up to protect a crowd with well oiled flies and loose fitting underpants.
They produce vague specifications, and expect industry to interpret them correctly. Every version that always appears is not properly thought through, they issue endless
amendments like this.
This ends up being a very raw deal for the consumer as you are finding out.
If you spend money for good gear, you should be able to expect to bring it home, plug it in correctly, and have it work. The dirty fact is that due to the above incompetent avaricious individuals that is not so.
We really should make this thread a sticky and send it to Digital Content protection for their comments.
This whole process has gone far too far, and legislative redress on behalf of the consumer is long overdue.
The manufacturers should show some spine, get to a version that works and just tell these clowns that will be the final version, and that improvements like 3D etc, they will be in charge, and make them plug and play and ignore future edicts from Digital Protection Corporation.
As I said before, I was in fear of similar issues to yours with my recent upgrade, but I got lucky.
The first BD disc I get that does not play, I will return and do without it. I'm not mucking about with firmware updates to please the enemy.
I did not put this rig together to watch Hollywood's garbage anyway, and I'm quite content to pass on it.
