I just wanted to pass along my experience with the above amp, new to my system as of today.

Let me qualify this by saying I am not a big audiophile, nor is my system killer. I have older Boston Acoustics front, center and sub, and some small Koss satellites in a 5.1 deal. The old amp was a 10yo Denon, which frankly sounded fine, but quit passing video. Plus I got a JVC HD-ILA 52" with HDMI input, so it was time to upgrade.
I spent the day in the swapover, including the obligitory clean out of the cabinet. And when I fired it all up, it worked from the get go.

The only cable to the monitor is the HDMI. The dvd is coming in on component, the satellite comes in on S-video. Both audio are optical. They both upconvert without any problem, and no audio sync issues, although that is adjustable were it to be a problem. It runs pretty hot, but not significantly more so than the Denon.

I havn't run the audio setup with the mic, and I'm still working it into my big Sony remote, but all in all, I would say it was everything I wanted out of an av reciever. The bass is much stronger than the Denon, I had to back my sub down. The volume is much easier to control than Denon's progressive style, always a peeve of mine.

I hope someone finds this helpful. If I learn anything further I"ll certainly post it. zz03

That's always been my experience with Onkyo. :)

I'll be looking to upgrade to the 705 soon enough so your comments are helpful.

ya i'm thinking of moving up from a denon 2307 to an onkyo 705, it should only cost about $70 in the upgrade and seems well worth it.

I have the Onkyo 705

One thing I noticed is that the maximum loudness stops at +6db yet it goes to I think +17db.

On the TV screen you can see that there are a few more bars that are not highlighted when I turn the system all the way up.

There is a setting to max out the volume hence I set it to +17db.

Not sure why it's not going louder. I will call Onyko to help me resolve this matter.

The auto mic does a poor job with the sub. I could barely hear it after the auto setup was done.

It did acuratly set my speaker distance.

I found I had to increase the sound pressure level to each speaker after the setup to find that sweet spot.

The auto setup will EQ your speakers but it did a poor job at getting the best sound. I switched to manuel mode and made my own adjustments.

Also you can not see what the EQ settings are after you run setup. That was very disapointing.

I also had to change all my crossover setting to 80HZ as the auto setup will change these values.

If you set your crossover to full range to the speakers the sub output does not work.

The system does sound very good. I have the KEF KEh 5005 speakers.

That would be because the channel trims are set to a number greater than zero. The volume numbers are just a scale - a range between mix and max - but the individual channel trims are an offset to that and thus reduce the range.

If you set your crossover to full range to the speakers the sub output does not work.
That is normal and is how bass management works. Any speaker set to Large (full range) will get the entire full range signal and none of it will be redirected to the sub. Normally you want all channels set to Small but if for some reason you want the fronts set to Large and still want the sub to play, turn on Double Bass.

SPL Levels

Don't expect the 3" woofers in your KEF satilite speakers to achieve reference levels in a large room. I would expect the speakers to have significant distortion before that Onkyo receiver runs out of power.

I finally figues out ot get my speakers sounding loud.

I used the analog outputs on my Panasonic blue ray DVD and connected them to my inputs on my 705. The sound is very good manily because I'm using the True HD out of the player in mulitchannel PCM mode.

Sounds good.

705 Question

I posted this as a new thread, didn't know there was one running on this receiver.

"I'm thinking of purchasing an Onkyo SR705 and I want to know if I use a HDMI input for DVD-A and SACD from my Oppo 981HD if the signal will be supported by the receiver's bass management system. I currently have a Denon 1803 and use the 6 Analog outputs from the Oppo into an outlaw bass management system and then into the Denon."

Also check out this review of the 705.
