HI- I went out and bought a tx-sr606 the minute they came out, I set it up and had some problems with the unit shutting down and going into protect mode I guess. It was happening at different times and mainly when the volume was a little higher, or a sub area was going to hit, but not very loud, by no means was I cranking it. It shut down about 10 times in 3 days from listening to music, to just watching blu rays on ps3. Everything is hooked up thru hdmi also. I took the unit back and traded in for another, everything has been fine till last night when I was playing a ps3 game, on low volume, I guess a grenade was exploding but I had this on low volume and boom the unit shut down taking my ps3 and tv with it since all is hooked up thru reciever. Can you all please let meknow what to check please, is this something I am doing? I cant reall crank it to test to see if it will keep shutting down because of living in a condo so I am kinda stuck. This is what I am running as far as components if that my make a difference:
I am running B&W N805s up front a b&w htm2 center, a jlb powered sub, and 2 b&w surrounds, then a ps3 and thats it. I use blue jeans speaker cables terminated with bannana plugs.
Would my speakers be causing this? I have checked for touching wires and see nothing?
Aslo I am just noticing I cant hook up a external amp to this receiver I guess doesnt have pre outs for that???? anyone know about using zone 2 outs for hooking up a line to the amp?
Do I need more power or something for these speakers?
I was running an old yamaha 5 years old with about same power with no problems ever. Thanks for any help!!!

Whats should I be looking for seth as far as shorts?
I self terminated all my bannana plugs on blue jeans cables, do I need to look for anything in the bannana plugs thanks

What is the nominal impedance of the B&W speakers? If they are nominal 4 Ohms then they will dip even lower than that at times and would be hard for the receiver to drive.

just to verify:

where did you plug the TV and PS3? to the wall or switched outlet on the receiver?

Are you saying you plugged the TV and PS3 into the receiver? If so that could be the problem.

Edit: Sorry Mike, didn't see that you had already posted.

Hi nope all plugged in to the wall!, I iwll check on the ohm issue with the b&w speakers. Doesnt onkyo have issues with this same problem on different models?

Similiar Problem

I have a tx-sr606 and have been losing the video signal to my TV after prolonged use. It doesn't matter if I use the HDMI or component video input. I started using the optical audio input from my fios HD box. Therefore the audio isn't affected. I'm starting to suspect an overheating problem?? since it happens over time.

Do you have good air flow around the receiver? I have mine in a cabinet but have vent holes under it and a fan sucking the heat out.

Minimal impedance is 3.7 ohms. Nominal impedance means nothing. If the phase angle is adverse, them may be the load looks like three ohms or less to the receiver.

I guess the OP's option is new speakers, or a new receiver with pre outs and an external amp.

If he continues to do what he is doing his receiver will have a short life. Really I would not advise driving most of the B & Ws with a receiver, and none of the 800 range.

I am no guru in audio equip but here's something my friend who had exactly the same problem did. Mind you - he has a diff set of receiver/speaker combo. He disconnected iteratively speakers, i.e. first were the front, then center, then sub and then surrounds. For whatever reason, his surrounds were causing his receiver to fall kaput. For testing, he removed a pair, cranked up volume somewhat and to be sure ran likewise with multiple audio sources, different music for couple of days.

I am experiencing the same problem as you with my Onkyo TX-SR606 shutting down during PS3's Rockband.

I've searched for solutions, but have not found any. I'm on the verge of buying a new receiver.

Were you ever able to fix your problem? Thanks in advance.

Have you checked for shorts in the speaker wiring? What speakers are you using?

I have the original predecessor of this model, the 605, and have not had one single problem with it shutting down or going into any kind of protection -- and that's with pretty high calibration and IntelliVolume settings...

It must be a connection issue, as stated...

It could also be a problem with the unit. Not enoug evidence in this thread to indicate either.

To the OP...
Follow bmninada advice with some slight modification. Remove all speaker connections and then add your mains in first and play them. If it does cut out, check the wiring at both the speaker and the receiver locations. Makre sure there are no strands of wire laying across both the positive and negative terminal. If the wiring checks out and teh recevier still cuts out, there's a problem with the receiver and it will need to be returned. If it doesn't cut, then add the center channel and test. Again check everything carefully. Finnaly add your surrounds and test again.

It's true that it could be a defective unit, no doubt; I was merely pointing out the fact that I didn't personally experience this problem with my 605, which is pretty much internally the same unit, and hence why I suggested it could be a hookup problem on his end too...
