Onkyo TX-SR605. Question on RGB-HDMI.

have just purchased an ONKYO TX-SR605 A/V receiver/amp. I’m new to the world of sound fidelity. I went to look on the manufacturer’s web-site but see no forum, so I wonder if anyone else here has one of these? I’m replacing a much older amplifier/receiver that stopped working.

My LCD HDTV display has an HDMI input, as does my cable box output. My DVD player only has RGB, so I’m running the DVD RGB into the amp, and “up-converting” to HDMI. At first, after setting up the inputs and connecting everything, I couldn’t access the DVD picture through the HDMI cable to the display. (The HDMI input from the cable box worked well through the amp, although I did notice some slight ghosting). After noticing that I had to configure my speakers (I only have a right and left, no surround sound yet- that’s next) to turn off all other speakers except right and left (front), I suddenly noticed that my DVD picture was working fine when I selected DVD on the amplifier. Now I’m wondering when it will stop working again :) Could it be that the “up-convert” mode was suppressed when the correct speaker configuration wasn’t yet set? Maybe the amplifier can sense when speakers are connected to certain ports?

Thanks for any suggestions. Bruce.

No, audio and video are not related in that sense. The only way the receiver can sense whether speakers are connected is when you run the auto-setup routine.

I can't help but think that you have a setup problem in the menus. I have a 605. Even though I have HDMI exclusively, I used to have an older DVD player connected to it via component video and S/PDIF audio. The connection from the receiver to the TV is and always was HDMI. That arrangement worked fine and it will on yours too.

The setup can get confusing. Go through it again carefully and I think you will be OK.

I think is is a problem with your video setup (not audio). I have a 605. The different inputs and outputs need to be correctly assigned. You do this inside the setup menu. It sounds like you only have a single HDMI cable between the 605 and the TV. There is a command in the setup that directs all video to the HDMI (Sorry I don't have my manual with me or I would tell you the setup sequence -- its laid out pretty good in the manual). Also, make sure you assign the component input and the S/PDIF audio input from that source to the DVD. The set menu is a little confusing at first, but after you play around with it for a while you'll get the hang of it.
