Onkyo TX-SR602 question

I have an onkyo tx-sr602 (plus or minus one on the last digit). When it switches between certain DSP modes there is a relatively loud clicking sound that I am guessing is a relay switching as it is the same sound as when the receiver is turned on/off (when turning the receive on there is a click immediately after pressing the power button, a delay, and then another just as it starts outputting to the speakers).

During commercial breaks with a cable box on HD channels my receiver is constantly switching between surround sound and either all channel stereo or stereo and I hear the same sound. Does this put any significant extra wear on the receiver over regular usage?

Also, is the receiver just turning on/shutting down the DSP/Surround sound circuitry when it is doing this, or is it shutting down the amplification circuitry to prevent noise coming out of the speakers when modes are being switched?

Hi. If it's like my two Pioneer receivers, it's turning on/off the amplification to the center and surround speakers when it switches from stereo to surround and back.

I'm guessing that you have it set to automatically set the surround mode. To avoid the clicking noise when watching TV, you can probably set it to surround (and it will probably switch between Pro-Logic when a stereo source is detected and Dolby Digital when that is detected).

Sounds right but I will play with it some more when I hook the cable box back up because I am currently having to switch between internet and the cable box. Either I have a bad splitter or there is just too many splits with too few amplifiers in this apartment complex.

Playing in tuner mode (can't access dolby digital but I can access everything else) it seems to only click when the surround speakers can be shut off or turned on.
