Onkyo TX SR 608 Receiever PC Input

I have old PC with a VGA video output, that I am trying to connect to my Onkyo 608 receiver via its PC in VGA input.

However, when I make the connection, the screen resolution from the computer to the receiver is 640x480. This makes the screen so small and then all the icons and desktop so BIG on the screen.

When I used to connect the same PC to my Toshiba TV via the same VGA wire, I was able to adjust the resolution to something like 1280x1024 making all the icons much smaller and fit nicer, similar to what you would see if the PC was connected to a monitor. The Toshiba was able to detect the PC as SVGA.

Through the Onkyo, I can't set the resolution on the computer to anything but 640x480.

Does anyone know what to do to fix this?

Thanks.

What is the TV Model?

We know your input to the receiver is PC in, what is your output? (HDMI,Component).

The Onkyo user guide glosses over the PC input but it really sounds like the scaler in the Onkyo isn't working correctly.

I would find the Native resolution of my TV and then come in at exactly that resolution and refresh rate with my PC or the next resolution DOWN (keep refresh rate the same).

Try both component and hdmi outputs from the receiver. Just follow the instructions on page 39 of the Onkyo's manual.

If you have a 720p or 1080i/p TV most likely since you actually have a VGA port on your video card it is old enough that it will not output those resolutions natively.

Possible workaround

Hey, I ran into the same issue with my TX-SR608. When I connected my PC to the VGA PC input I couldn't get the resolution to work.

My video card has DVI outputs, so I picked up a DVI to HDMI adapter and used the HDMI PC input instead of the VGA.

The higher resolutions still were displayed a bit too large (much better results than with the VGA connection - I was getting a green, fuzzy, squished image at the highest res. Lowered the resolution a bit and it works great now.

Hope this helps someone.
