Generally, pre-outs are analog, otherwise it's a digital output.
If you're actually asking about the input requirements for zone output, it's probably due to additional DACs being required. I know some of Denon's new upper-end receivers can use digital input for zone output when a 2-channel PCM signal is input via coax/optical.
