Onkyo "Trips" When On Dolby Surround 5.1

I have read many posts about the Onkyo "tripping" or going into some kind of safe mode once the volume got loud. I checked my speaker wires to make sure note even a thread of wire was touching another. I found 2 problems, corrected them and when I turned the volume up very high on ALL CHANNELS / ALL SPEAKERS mode, nothing tripped. Thinking I was good to go, I later switched the receiver over to Dolby 5.1 and yep, the system tripped into safe mode so I really have no idea what the cause is, other than to never put it on Dolby 5.1. I am wondering if the problem might lie within the receive itself, such as a setting of some kind? It an TX-SR393.

Usually the multich stereo mode is the harder on the avr than surround, so that seems a bit odd when protection is tripped....Do you have any particular eq applied in one vs the other? Have you tried a reset?

What speakers and just how loud?

Hello and welcome. What kind of speakers are connected to the receiver? Are you using a subwoofer? Are the speakers set to Full Band or are you using a crossover setting?

It's a variety of random speakers that I've collected :) I would say that from 1-100 on the volume, it is around 60 that the shutdown occurs but only on Dolby. I have gone up to 75 on ALL CHANNELS and nothing tripped. I do have a subwoofer and to be honest, I do not know what you mean between full band and crossover. Sorry...I know how to plug the stuff in but the more technical settings are beyond me. Maybe I should look at the Onyko settings and disable/enable something?

Sub? If output is displaying 5.1, then you are using a sub or it would display 5.0. Not sure if you were speaking of a DD 5.1 input signal. What are these random speakers?

The speakers are Sony, RCA and a couple of generic ones where I can't see the brand because of where they are mounted. I do have a subwoofer and I took a picture of the setting which is the one they trip on.

Are these speakers like from HTIB (home theater in a box) type sets? Sony and RCA brands are pretty generic usually. They can be very low impedance and could be the base cause. To use a subwoofer you tell the avr there is a sub and change speaker settings from full band to one with a crossover (80hz is a good starting point). That should lessen the load a bit.

I will give this a try. And yes, they're from HTIB so they are certainly not top of the line. Those I have in my bedroom ceiling with 9 speakers total running on another Onkyo and they are excellent. I have to take the cat to the vet but will look at the settings and use your post as a reference to see if that might fix it. Otherwise, I'm ok leaving them on ALL CHANNEL.

Ok, so you have it set to a 5.1 Configuration and have the Subwoofer set to Yes. Under the Crossover settings, I'd set all of the speakers to 100Hz or HIGHER and set the LFE of LPF to 120Hz. Don't know which HTIB speakers are in use here so better safe than sorry. The other thing I'd do since you are dealing with mystery speakers is something many would never do. Set the Speaker Impedance setting to 4ohm. This will limit the power output but also keep you from burning up the receiver trying to pump a bunch of power out to a bunch of mystery speakers.

I'm assuming the subwoofer in use is self powered and connected to the Onkyo's subwoofer pre out and you are not using a passive unit and are trying to power it and the front speakers from the FRONT Speaker terminals. What is the device you are using when this happens? I see you have a device connected via HDMI and it is outputting a PCM signal and the Dolby Surround mode is selected. What is the connected device and what are the current audio output settings of the device?
