Onkyo SR507 - Route Component to HDMI Out?

Hi Everyone,

I have an Onkyo SR507 receiver and I've connected my HD Cable Box with Component + Audio to the receiver's "IN 2 (CBL/SAT)" connection. Then I want to route this connection to the HMDI output, but I'm having problems figuring out how to do this using the receiver setup.

Is anyone doing this with their SR507 (or 607) currently? If so, can you give me the steps you used to set this up correctly?

I tried to set this up like this:

Setup > 1. Input Assign > 1.2 Component > CBL/SAT

Then for "CBL/SAT" I flip through the options: "IN1", "IN2", and "------". But none of them seem to work.

Thanks! -Chris.

Hey, Chris. I'm downloading the owner's manual now. I'll let you know what I find.

Chris, the TX-SR507 doesn't convert video signals from one format to another. So, it won't convert a component video input into an HDMI output. You need to connect the component video output from the TX-SR507 to the television (or just directly connect the component video from your cable box to the television, like you mentioned in your other thread).

Darn it I was afraid of that. :(

Oh well I'll bypass the AVR with my Component video. Thanks Adam for looking it up for me! I was going to look through the manual but realized I probably wouldn't recognize the info telling me that it isn't possible even if I read it!! :D

But I read that even if it did convert, I may lose signal quality. Not sure how old that info was, so maybe new AVRs don't have that problem.

Chris, no problem! Sorry that it won't do what you were wanting to do.

When I check a manual for that info, I look for the diagram that shows the flow of video signals through the receiver. For your TX-SR507, that diagram is shown and discussed on page 23 of the owner's manual.

Well I just discovered that I have to connect the audio from the box to the TV as well because it also won't pass through to the TV. I need to have the AVR on to hear audio. I thought it would work for some reason but it doesn't.

So I've had to also bypass the audio and connect it straight to the TV. That's pretty diappointing. I don't see why they can make AVRs just simply pass the signal through if the unit is off. It makes no sense that receiver has to be on to pass audio to TV.

So I guess I'll have to find a cable or satellite HD service that has a box with HDMI. :(

Adam, can you link me the manual for Onkyo SR 607? Maybe that can do what I'm looking for.

Chris, I don't know of any receivers that will pass analog audio/video signals without being on. That doesn't mean that they don't exist, but it's certainly not common.

Onkyo keeps a list of its owner's manuals at this link here, with receivers being at the link here, and the Onkyo TX-SR607 manual in PDF format at the link here.

Adam, Audioholics should give you a Gold Medal for being so helpful!! I don't think I have ever come across someone so willing to help out. Maybe one or two others, max.

I guess I should be using HDMI for my HD Cable Box anyway, and I'm almost positive this receiver will pass HDMI through with the unit off.

Thanks for the kind words, Chris! I'm just happy to help out when I can.

After checking through the owner's manual, there is one mention that I could find of that unit passing HDMI signals through when the unit is in standby mode. It's on page 77 under the "Power Ctrl" function description and states:
When set to “On”, regardless of whether the AV
receiver is On or on Standby, both audio and video
received by an HDMI input will be output by the
HDMI OUT for playback on the TV or other
component that’s connected to the HDMI OUT.
So, it's not an obvious setting under an HDMI menu for "Standby Pass-Thru" or anything, but it does appear to do it. I'm going to guess that it will pass the HDMI input that was selected last before the unit was put into standby mode, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks Adam! I have turned those features ON just in case I forget about them once I get an HDMI cable/sat service hooked up. I'm getting really good now with the receiver setup menus. :D
