Onkyo DV-CP802 Universal DVD/SACD Changer

Onkyo has introduced the DV-CP802, a six disc progressive scan SACD/DVD changer that is compatible with nearly every disc format in use today, including DVD-Audio and multi-channel SACD high-resolution audio formats.

The six-disc carousel features a sophisticated 108-Mhz/12-bit video D/A converter and progressive scan component video output with 3:2 pulldown capability. The DV-CP802 also features 192-kHz/24-bit audio DACs. Conspicuously absent is a Firewire IEEE 1394 connection - odd, since both SACD and DVD-Audio transmission over Firewire has been approved.

The Onkyo DV–CP802 six-disc changer is currently available in both black and silver at a suggested retail price of $500.

Looks sweet! And just what I've been waiting for. Any word on the bass management capabilities?

DV-CP802 Bass Management

The front, surround and center speakers can be set to large or small. There isn't a specific cross-over frequency listed in the manual. However, it does say that if the speaker cone is 6.5" or larger to set it to large.

There are also distance settings, but they only apply to DD/DTS, not SACD or DVD-A.

If playing regular PCM CDs through the multichannel outputs (all outputs are always active), the unit does send a signal to the subwoofer channel if the unit is configured for multi-channel.

The sound is very nice compared to my SCD-CE775 and RP-91.

That sounds like fixed 80Hz to me... I'll have to check out more in the manual or get one in here to look at.

For the price it seems like a great unit, though I can't understand why Firewire isn't on there. I suppose companies are coming out with a few products now that didn't have enough notice to get IEEE 1394 onto the schematics in time.

BM on DV-CP802

80hz makes sense to me and would correspond to the Onkyo TX-NR901 receiver manual which shows the following:

6-1/2 to 8 in. (16–20 cm) - 80Hz (THX)

I can completely deal with an 80hz crossover, just as long as it's 100 hz or lower.

As long as it truly works properly (only high-pass to the mains, the LFE & the bass from all the other channels to sub) then 80 hz would be fine. But better still would be adding the ability to set the bass level for each source individually as opposed to one global setting for all MC stuff. In other words, I'd love to be able to set the bass one way for SACD, another for DVD-A, another for DD/DTS. Certainly the player recognizes what it's playing, so adding this feature wouldn't be difficult for the designers. Of course, the menu could allow one global setting for those who don't wish to tweak.

Totally agreed, and the distance settings should work for all sources as well.

True DSD Decode?

Does this unit offer true DSD decode circuitry or does it do it via the PCM circuit like the 563A??

As combo players are getting cheaper, I wonder if the 563A route is becoming the norm. When I finally do go SACD, I want the truest experience possible.

Video wise, how does this unit stack up to say the Denon 2900 or Yamaha 2300?

I think the '2200 might be a better comparison. The new Onk is $500- comparisons to a $1000 player aren't exactly fair.
