Hey guys, just bought an onkyo 905 and I have a question. My tv as of now only takes a component connection for HD so ill be using that for my monitor out. I plan on hooking up my ps3 to the unit and Ive heard i can use the hdmi for audio to get the hd signals and component for video. I think the only way to accomplish this is to run the hdmi cable from the ps3 to the onkyo and the video cables driectly to the tv in order to get this to work but if you guys have a better idea id appreciate it.

PS3 is funny either HDMI or component

On PS3 you run HDMI or component or s-video or composite.

Run the PS3 as component at 1080i and don't use HDMI at all( actually on PS3 it is an either or not both) . Run two RCA cables or left/right audio.

Good Luck

There's a couple options. You could simply run component directly to the TV from the PS3 and use an optical audio cable to the 905. This was how I had mine set up before my HDMI cables arrived. I was able to get full 1080p with no issues this way.

The other option would be to run HDMI from the PS3 to the 905, then component from the 905 to the TV.

Just be sure to set your audio out correctly on the PS3.

The Onkyo TX-NR905 can down transcode HDMI to Component? This I did not know, what a nice feature. If indeed it does this, I would recommend this over any other option.

It will pass the video via component from the ps3 thru the 905 onto the monitor. The hdmi will only be carrying the audio which will stop at the reciever is how I understand it. I will just have to run both component and hdmi from the ps3 to the 905, then use the compnent monitor out.

No, that will not work. The PS3 cannot output HDMI and Component at the same time. You must use the HDMI output of the PS3 to go to the TX-NR905, then setup the Onkyo to transcode (convert) HDMI to component output to go the the Television. You can't set the PS3 to only send audio over HDMI while the video goes over component, you have to chose between HDMI or component for output from the PS3.

Page 35 of the PDF manual: The top right diagram seems to support this setup option.

See attached Word doc excerpt.

That graphic does not show that a HDMI input will go out to Component. The arrow would have to point from HDMI over to component like the arrow on S-video pointing to Composite. The only one that will "downconvert" is s-video going out as composite.

I know of no receiver or pre pro that will down convert a HDMI connection to any other format.

I noticed that too but, what I was looking at was this:
in the first diagram, it shows the possibility that the DVD player is connected to the AVR via HDMI

The next diagram below shows connections via everything but HDMI.

I guess that's my fault for assuming. If I had a component cable long enough to reach my TV now, I'd try it but, I can't.

It appears you can't do that, our mistake.

I now suggest using component video paired with optical output from the PS3. As mentioned before HDMI and Component cannot be output at once on the PS3.

This will work as I mentioned before. The only issue might result from your original post. You ask about HD audio signals so I'm assuming you're asking about DTS HD MA & DD TrueHD. I'm not sure if these can be passed via optical audio cables. Maybe Seth or ADK can confirm this?

DTS-MA and TrueHD can only be transmitted over HDMI. The best Toslink can to is Dolby Digital EX and regular DTS.

On the PS3 these (with the newest firmware for DTS-MA) are passed as LPCM with the PS3 doing the decoding.

All this means is that the front of the 905 will say multichannel instead of the name of the format (TrueHD etc.).

Very cool. I'm guessing you simply had to define the outputs in the PS3 setup menus? Makes sense.

I'm glad you found a solution and taught us something in the process.
