all,

My speaker setup is in my sig. All polk 70s,60s, cs2 and atrium5.

My current receiver onkyo 608 is doing ok pushing all thins junk, but I can tell these puppies are just beggin for more power. So I need a new receiver and an amp. Amp will be something multichanel, like emotiva or outlaw.

I have about $400-$500 to blow on the receiver and on accessories4less the following can be had in that price range.

onkyo 707
or
Marantz Sr5003 or sr5004 or sr6003

I guess in me being new to this, I really don't know what to look for, besides pre-outs and and a 12v trigger and they all seem to have that. Is there any reason to go with either one of these or a reason to AVOID either one of these, given the speakers that I have?

any and all suggestions welcome and appreciated!

I actually uncovered a few things that I did not know.

the marantz 5004 apparently had some sort of a click of death problem. I think i'm crossing this one off the list. I also did not realize that different receivers sounds differently... and I do feel like my onkyo sounds too bring for my teste with these polks, and now i'm thinking that the 707 would likely have the same brightness as the 608, so now i'm leaning towards a mazantz 5003 or 6003.

does anyone know how bright mazantz is compared to onkyo? or is that different with each speaker?

I also have a sony ES seried DA4300ES I can get locally for $500 used. Now I'm thinking maybe I should give this a shot.

ugh....I'm just confused...

Modern receivers are neither bright nor warm so don't worry about this. I personally like the 707 in this situation. I prefer Audyssey receivers as I like how they correct the sound in-room.

This is correct. Modern receivers do not color the sound unless you are using some form of processing. If those Polks are new then I suspect that you just need more time with them.

After reading 100s of posts the Marantz 5004 issues seem to have been resolved with a software upgrade at the factory. They are currently available at www.onecall.com for $449 incl. shipping.

actually all the speakers are new, and i'm finding that the more I listen to them the better the range of sound is getting. I think this may be the speaker break in phenomenon at work. I'l keep playing them for a few more days, watch a few more movies. I thought speaker break in was b.s. but the whole system has gotten louder/more filling and even the sub is "loosening" up and starting to sound better.

It's most likely just you getting used to the sound. You're quite possibly hearing things that you didn't even know were in the recording so it doesn't sound "right" to you. Give it a few days and see how you feel about them.

The other thing that may be effecting your feelings might be the sub. It's not a super powerful sub. If the room is too large for it you may need to supplement it with a second or at least adjust its location.

I may be mis-reading your post, but all of the receivers Lietuvis91 listed have Audyssey.

I disconnected the rear speakers (the atrium 5), because I figured i'd rather have 5 channels getting more power then 7 getting less. And this did seem to improve the sound of the m70's front and m60s' surround. the speakers sound more alive.

I think I will run it in the 5.1 mode from now on. It seems fine this way, I don't really miss the 2 rear speakers. When I get a new receiver and an amp, I will hook those rears back up. But now I feel I am in no rush to spend that extra $1000 on a receiver+amp just yet.

thanks for your input everyone, i'm learning :D
