What make/model speakers are they? What is the 160w spec basis?

The high end of such a speaker wattage spec is usually a melting point, possibly (probably) the speaker won't even sound good with that max power level. Depends on how loud you listen and at what distance from the speakers, but either avr should be fine amp-wise to drive your speakers to loud levels. Sound quality differences are more about how dsp preference in one unit vs the other; I'd rather have Denon's Audyssey than Onkyo's AccuEQ, tho...maybe check this more advanced Denon refurb

Denon also allows crossmixing DTS and DD with the new upmixers. Onkyo is cheaper for similar specs, and usually can push more power i. The same price range, but you lose audyssey and cross mixing. I own the 656 and really my only complaint is accueq, which does more harm than good. If you end up getting the onkyo, I'd perform a manual calibration.

I can have the 730 for $300, does the 2300 worth the addition $100?

I believe the Denon site can give you a comparison to the two avrs so you can see whether the differences are worth $100 to you....
