The owners manual implies that only NON-HDMI signals are upgraded. So do I have to" down-grade" my HDMI to a component connection inorder "upscale" through Farodja????????

Yes, if you want to use the scaler in the receiver. It also only scales up to 1080i so your TV will still do the de-interlacing. Or, just send the signal through using HDMI and let your TV do all the scaling. Which TV model do you have?
