Ongoing receiver wierdness

ok, I've posted a couple of times about my ongoing saga with the pair of Harmon Kardon receivers that I've gotten from e-bay, and here's the latest...

I have a second hand Harmon Kardon receiver (avr 630) that I've not been able to get sound out of. Same sort of issue that I had with the last one that I got from the same buyer - originally I won an AVR 510, and they gave me the avr 630 when the 510 proved to be toast.

Now then. I've not been able to get the 630 to give me any sound either - until today. With a pair of athena micra speakers plugged into the front left and front right ports, I could not even get sound when the unit was turned to the FM radio option. However, I figured I'd plug in some headphones and see if I could hear anything.
I picked up an adapter so that I could use my walkman's headphones, and when I plugged them in, I got sound!

but... not from the headphones.

When I plug in the headphones, I get sound from the speakers. Faint sound, but sound none the less.

anyone have any idea what the heck is going on with this thing? I'm tempted to just take it into a harmon kardon repair shop, but this is just so...weird. I'm curious if anyone might have any ideas.

of note - I do not have a remote, so I can't just cheat and hit "auto setup"

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sure sounds defective to me. You've gotten two bad receivers and if you read forums a lot there is no shortage of complaints of H/K reliability.

It's probably not fair to claim HK is junk given that they sell millions of receivers and we've seen a few thousand complaints, but I wouldn't touch one.
