One of these days.....a new receiver.

My next upgrade, whenever my poor budget will allow, will be a receiver or pre/pro setup. I will apply it my current system, but with an eye toward my next upgrade...new speakers. I've narrowed it down to 3 brands of speakers, all of which carry a burden of 4 or 6 ohm nominal, relatively inefficient speakers. There will be 6 of these in the surround system.

The advice I seek is your input on with what best to drive the future speakers and which will provide no loss of sonic capability. My preference is a value purchase of a single receiver (because of convenience/rack space availability. As an example, will the Yammie 2600 suffice?). If the pre/pro route is necessary (necessary!!), then I truly need guidance concerning value pricing/performance. I have no clue about this application.

The speakers I have in mind (almost daydreaming now...but pepsi bottles are being saved) are Axiom M80ti, Aerial 7B, and possibly either RBH 1266 or ACI Panarama. As usual, your advice and wisdom is much appreciated.

Psst! Rjbutz! (looks both ways just to make sure nobody's near). It's not a new receiver you need; it's room treatment. :D

I really don't mean to hijack this thread; if you want a receiver, it is of course your choice whether or not to go and buy one. But let me tell you a story...;)

My Z9 recently had to have a minor glitch fixed. In the interim, I hooked-up my old Musical Fidelity Pre/Power amps. The thing is, the volume knob is a bit worn at low volumes. As a result, from time to time the 'dust' that's been rubbed off the volume causes an audible 'crackling' sound from the speakers. The noise isn't terrible, but I didn't like hearing it through my Missions so I hooked-up an old pair of Tannoy Mercury M1 bookshelves that I bought many years ago.

I cannot tell you how good the sound was with my room treated. I'll not deny that the sound was better with my Missions, but for a pair of approximately $210 speakers, and discounting the CD player/amp etc as contibuting much, the sound was unbelievable. If ever there was proof of the difference room treatment makes, for me, that was it.

You may wish to buy a new receiver for features you do not already have. That is your prerogative. But if it is for an improved sound over and above that which you currently have, then I truly believe room treatment is the way to go. It will breathe new life into your sound.

Regards

Thanks, Robbie. I take that as fact and high praise for the treatments.

I do have issues with my current receiver, which must be replaced, first. Then....maybe...but affordability is a large matter currently. :(
