Sorry for your loss Matt,

As an only son I had dogs since very young and I know how you feel, every time one of my friends would pass on the depression would last for weeks, I'm truly sorry for your loss. It was particularly hard with my Great Dane, I was as close to him as any of my human relatives, unfortunately Danes are not long lived, but they make up for it with their personality and unconditional love.

I'm so very sorry Matt.

I'm near tears just thinking about this. I have a 6 year old Carolina Dingo/Basenji mix (?) myself, and I just recently went through my parents dog (my first dog) being put down after nearly 17 years of life.

It's rough. They really are a part of your family. Part of you.

Matt,
I was completely at the end of my patience yesterday with our new puppy.
Your post put things in a different perspective. As much as the pets can get on my nerves, I can't imagine how I would feel if something happened to one them.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss. Your wife's as well.

I lost my boxer (Tigger) 2 years ago and I still think about him daily and tell endless stories about him. He was almost 13 years old which is really good for the breed. He developed a tumor around his spin and he went from totally healthy to not being able to get up or walk in a two week period. I had promised him from the day I got him that I would take good care of him and never let him suffer. The day I took him to the vet, I knew he wouldn’t be coming home again, it was the hardest thing I have done. He somehow pulled his last bit of strength and walked through the door of the vet, a lady was setting there and the last words he heard from a stranger was “that’s the best looking Boxer I have ever seen”. He collapsed as soon as we got into the exam room.

Matt, I feel your pain and my heart goes out to you. I have tears going down my face as I write this. Keep your head held high knowing that you were a good provider to him and he had a very good life. His memories will last a life time!

Matt, I am so sorry to hear of you and your wifes loss. :(

I feel your pain.:(

We too just lost one of my dearest freinds...our 9 year old Great Dane Elliot. He was the most gentle kind hearted soul I have ever met. I love dogs and have had many dogs in my life but there is always that one that has a special place in your heart. Elliot was and is mine. I smile when I think of him. stratman and I have felt the huge gravitational pull of the Great Dane and I know that German Shepperd's have the same affect on people. (as well as others:))

My wife called me at work when she arrived home to find him lying on the floor not able to get up and she believes that Elliot was holding on for me, even after I got home he would not let go so we took him to the vet too relieve him of his suffering. We think it was a stroke.

It's been a couple of weeks and things are getting much better.

Take care and make sure to give your wife our condolences,
Doug

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It's so quiet around our house now, he was always a talker.

You'd ask him if he wanted a treat, *woof*, tell him shoosh and he'd bark softer. He knew when it was feeding time, come five o'clock he was pawing at his food pan.

I'll miss him most when I'm out in the yard or in the garage, he loved being outside and since our house has a 6ft fence all away around it he could roam free. I'd let him out and he'd do his perimeter check then everything was ok.

Matt,

There's nothing better then the love / devotion you'll get from a great dog like yours. Words just don't do it, sorry for your loss.
