My wife just called and said my 9 year old German Shepard just died. Don't know what else to say.....completely heartbroken.

Bailey, best dog I've ever had.

Awwww. I grew up with Shepards. So sorry for your loss.
I believe as James Herriot, the famous Vet did,-
"I believe that where ever we go in the next life, our animals go with us."

Matt,

Very sad to hear about your puppy. Brings tears to my eyes. My dog is going to be 14 and I know the day is coming soon.

A Dog's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

She doesn't know and the vet couldn't say, my wife said he had diarrhea yesterday and was a little lethargic but nothing we haven't seen before. He has always been a very healthy dog and we stay current on all their vacs.

This afternoon her grandmother called her at work and said he was panting heavily out in the yard and wouldn't move so she called my wife and by the time she had gotten home he was only taking a breath every 30 seconds or so. She gave him CPR but he wasn't responsive, died in her arms.

That dog meant everything to my wife, we have had him since he was 8 weeks old. I got him shortly after we had a miscarriage so she developed a very strong bond with him.

It was one thing I did not have to worry about when I was on deployments was I knew, without a doubt, that dog would be there for her and protect her with his life.

mazersteven,

We have that hung up on each of our kennel runs at work.

Matt, I can't express how sorry I am for you and yours. I saw the title of the thread, and having read your posts for the past few months, I just knew what it would be.

Last year, my dog died in my arms before I really even knew what was happening. It was like a sledge hammer hit me. She had a bad reaction to some medicine that the vet gave her. I still think of her every day. I know how difficult it must be for you all right now. You have my deepest sympathy.

I wish you and your family strength through this, and I'm sure that your wife can't wait for you to get home.

Thanks, I head home Wed morning, really wish I could be there now.

I really do think he waited for her to get home before he died.

The vet said it could have been anything from a heart attack to many other things that I can't even pronounce. He didn't suffer long, that much I'm thankful for.

I asked her if she thinks he could have been poisoned and she said not likely, we are having animal control come out to the house to look around the yard just to be on the safe side for our other dogs.

real men don't chain their friends

I'm so sorry for you man. My friend is here with me now and does not stray far. He's 10 and just the thought...is too much. Know that he was loved and lived a great one. He was fortunate in his living. Very fortunate to have had you and your wife! Take care.

Hey, Matt. Real sorry to hear about your dog. He was a beautiful one! I have fond memories of my uncle's Shepherd. His name was Rusty. We would come visit and he would look in the rolled down windows of the car, smelling around checking us out before we could even get out. His bark really resonated, too!
Be careful coming home! We don't need anymore tragedy!

So sorry to hear that Matt! And I thought I was having a bad day (student loans came up short). I honestly am not prepared for this when the time comes for my dog. It truly is sad to see this happen to you, considering how well you treat your pets. All we can do is cherish the time we have with them, and make they're time on this earth priceless.

Take Care,
Brian

My deepest regrets, Matt, to you and your wife. Dogs give such unconditional love. Loss of that spirit is unbelievably difficult. Thank god for the memories and experiences you've had with Bailey.

Sorry for your loss buddy. I've always had a soft spot for german sheperds/Alsatians (prolly coz my parents never let me have one as a kid) :( Dogs bring so much joy, it's such a tragedy to lose one. All I can say is, having had 3 generations of cats and dogs, I feel your loss.

Matt, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss of a friend.

It sounded so sudden, the first thing I thought of was a poisoning.
I hope that wasn't the case.

Find some comfort in knowing your wife was there.
I wish you and your family the best.
Rick
